Product Description
As SilverStone engineers started working on the third model for the Fortress series, they had contemplated on the future of computer chassis and ways to improve it for home/office integration. So the Fortress FT03’s design goal was to simply give back as much user space as possible by reducing chassis depth to unprecedented level. The engineers also wanted to accomplish the change in design without compromises to the chassis s ability in accommodating upper mainstream components. Traditional computer chassis designs take up desktop room by not only their physical footprint, but they also require additional space for cable connections. With the FT03, there are no such restrictions because its beautiful, 2.5mm thick, sand-blasted and anodized aluminum outer shells have no cable connectors to be found on all four sides, which frees up tremendous amount of desktop real estate for its users.SilverStone Aluminum Micro ATX, 120mm Fan x3, USB 3.0 x 2, 3.5-Inch x 3 and 2.5-Inch x1 Drive Bays Tower Computer Case FT03B (Black) Review
I was looking for a case that was big enough to hold a large video card (think HD 7970), and a huge CPU cooler, while also being a bit portable. When I saw the Silverstone Tek Carrying Bag for Sugo Series or Other SFF Cases (SUGO-PACK) I knew it was going to be very portable. And the specs claimed it could hold bigger video cards than are in existence today, and could handle CPU coolers up to 167mm. They don't lie. I've got a 160mm Thermalright True Spirit (120) and a Sapphire Radeon HD 7970 OC 3GB DDR5 HDMI/DVI-I/Dual Mini DP PCI-Express Graphics Card 11197-01-40G. The video card fit with the stock setup well enough. But I decided to pull the bottom 120mm fan that is at a 45 degree angle and use the optional setup witch is 2 flat mounted 80mm fans at the bottom. With that set up the video card has inches of extra room. Here's a few tips if you get this case to save you time.
-A Corsair H80 may work. It depends on your motherboard and your patience.
-You have to use a slim line optical drive, something like this: Sony 8X SATA Internal Slim DVD+/-RW Drive Bulk with out Software (AD-7690H-01). To use that drive you need a special power/sata connector that won't come with the drive or your PSU. StarTech.com 20-Inch Slimline SATA to SATA with LP4 Power Cable Adapter (SLSATAF20)
-All the sata cables that come with your motherboard will all be way longer than you need. I suggest going to Monoprice and getting replacements. I replaced all the cables in my case for about $16.
-The specs say that the case can use PSUs that are up to 180mm. I used a fully modular 190mm PSU and it fit Seasonic PLATINUM-860 ATX 860 Power Supply.
-Follow the order in the owners manual for installing components and you'll save your self hours of time and at least one headache.
-The front panel does come off, just not the same way as the two side panels. It just pops straight off instead of sliding up first.
-Due to the placement of the HDDs it isn't possible for this case to have a hole in the mobo tray to give you access to the back of the CPU. That means that upgrading the CPU cooler after you have the system all setup will require you to remove just about everything and will take longer than you expect :P
I'm glad I got this case. Its stylish and extremely functional. The 90 degree rotated mobo mounting system is brilliant for many reasons. I hop it catches on more widely.
