I bought this product from my supplier, but I wanted to leave some feedback for this product - for future purchasers.

At first, I was concerned and felt I might of made a bad move with this product. I was wrong. Let me explain..

I bought this unit for Business purposes. I use Backup Exec, and wanted to use 'Backup to Disk' option to backup our company's data w/ this unit. I had plans to use it's ISCSI feature, and put it on our network directly via Gigabit Ethernet.

At first, I was concerned-

After putting everything up and online (which took maybe 30 mins to get it up and going) - I setup a job w/ Backup Exec, B2D - etc, and off it went.

Here lies the concern! The backup took over 40 HOURS for 240 GB. That's insane! This thing is slow!! I averaged 93MB/min it said w/ Backup Exec.

I almost felt like this just isn't gonna do it, but I was adamant on getting this to work as I visioned it to.

So at last ditch effort.. I reformatted the iSCSI Volume I created in the unit, I rebuilt the iSCSI volume on the Terastation/server that was connecting to the iSCSI volume, and modified many options that might of been the issue.

My unit came w/ Firmware 2.0 - Buffalo had 2.4 on their site, Even though I chose check for updates via the Web Admin panel of the unit, it did not find it. I had to download the firmware update manually from their website, for this particular unit. Upon doing so, Make sure to unmount/disconnect any iSCSI volumes you have anywhere - and basically close any applications that are connected to it. Load up the Firmware updater software, and away it goes. Pretty fast, and successfully updated my units firmware to 2.4. I think this was a big help w/ my speed issues prior.

Backup Exec specific changes:

It says 'choose any LAN available' in your Network/Security tab of your backup job. Make sure to select a specific LAN adapter, and NOT leave it at Automatic. I only had one on my Backup Server, so I felt it was not needed, but this is not the case, and has proven w/previous feedback that this does help some people.

Open File Backup Technology - VSS - Make sure to choose MS if you are running Windows Server 2003, 2008, etc - I chose the Windows Server 2003 option since it was running on 2003 (the backup server) - but a lot of the systems it is scheduled to backup nightly are running Windows Server 2008 - After modifying this, this helped alot.

Compression - Make sure to use SOFTWARE, this unit does not support HARDWARE. Oddly choosing 'Hardware otherwise Software', did not work. You have to choose Software in particular, for compression.

Welp, after all of this fiddling, and trying to get this to work as expected - I was pleasantly surprised w/ my nightly backup statistics the following day!

So a little summary of what the nightly backup job was doing:
FULL Backing up of a Physical Server/Backup Server completely - 2 partitions , system state, shadow copies, etc.
FULL Backing up of 5 Virtual Servers running w/ VMWare. All partitions on each virtual server(2), system state, and shadow copies, etc.
FULL Backing up of Microsoft Exchange + Logs/DB, etc.
FULL Backing up of a SQL Server etc.
FULl Backing up of a File Server etc.
I created on the Terastation a 3 TB iSCSI Volume - Backup Exec sees it as a physical drive attached to the server.
I made folders for each day, Set overwrite protection for over a week - so I could have 2 weeks of retention on the set. Made a Media Set that consisted of 7 separate jobs - Mon-Sunday.
The weekdays are Incremental , and Sunday does a full backup (the stats mentioned below).

The stats of the FULL backup:

I received over 2000 MB/min at the highest points, and averaged w/ the summary of the complete backup @ 670MB/min. My LTO-3 Tape drive was averaging when it completed right around the same point of speed. The complete backup for 240GB took me 6.5hours or so, and this is the same time our LTO-3 Tape backup woould take on this same job. With Software compression enabled , it not only was faster, but it only took 171GB of the drive, vs 240GB w/ no compression.

COPY/PASTE of some of my stats received:

EXCHANGE SERVER:
Processed 20,716,307,668 bytes in 31 minutes and 3 seconds.
Throughput rate: 636 MB/min
Compression Type: Software
Software compression ratio: 1.2:1

SQL SERVER:
Processed 7,863,261,416 bytes in 3 minutes and 38 seconds.
Throughput rate: 2064 MB/min
Compression Type: Software
Software compression ratio: 2.3:1

FILE SERVER:
Processed 100,926,833,030 bytes in 1 hour, 7 minutes, and 25 seconds.
Throughput rate: 1428 MB/min
Compression Type: Software
Software compression ratio: 1:1

Conclusion:

ISCSI - Gigabit network - Backup Exec 12.5 (that's what I use- trust me..) - and this lovely unit the Terastation TS5200D = Great backup solution! We spent under $650 for this unit, already had Backup Exec setup on the server - it was a small investment, to replace a archaic solution we were once utilizing.

My only change I would make in the future from this purchase , is I would like to get the unit w/ 3 bays, for higher Raid levels (I am running at RAID 1 - so it duplicates the hard drive automatically in their array.(MIRROR)
