This is a sweet media player. It plays just about every media file there is. Tons of settings in the menus, great on firmware updates (you can backdate to any prior revision). It's lightweight (when no drive is inside; supports up to 3TB). No fan, so no fan noise (but that means any drive used must be cool-running). 4 USB ports for attachable media (if you count the one inside), plus eSata and an SDHC slot.
And of course 10/100 Ethernet, which I can get about 80Mb/sec across.
It works with DLNA and Samba shares, and can also act as a Samba server itself.

You can get it to display cover art, although it takes some finagling with a special text file you must place in every directory. Or use one of several downloadable programs to automate the task.

You can download some free apps for it (and it comes with some already) like a browser, Bittorrent, Shoutcast, a weather station (only shows in Celsius, but there's a smaller widget that works in Fahrenheit), and games like Chess, Sudoku, Reversi, Tetris, Snake. (Some are in Russian)

I've found that when playing music files through the Toslink output, the bitrate matches the file being played and is not upconverted. This is good - it outputs a bit-exact representation - but it'd be nice to be able to switch it to upconvert if so desired. It will downconvert if you set the maximum output rate to less than whatever the file contains.

If you like to watch part of a movie and come back to it later, this player is great for that. Everything except BR will continue where you left off. You can even make it do it for audio files as well.

The VFD display shows the name of the menu you're on, the filename or title that just began playing, and the elapsed play time of the title. It can be made to show the time of day when the unit is turned off, but the unit will have to go into standby mode instead of full shutdown.
