Philips Brilliance 272P4QPJKEB 27-Inch Screen LCD Monitor Review

Pros:

- 2560x1440 resolution is a Godsend. Just utterly spectacular definition/detail, and is a feast for the eyes.

- The monitor arrived without a single dead or hot pixel. I was quite impressed.

- Love the swivel mount, and I use the monitor sideways when doing documents sometimes.

- Three USB 3.0 ports is such a nice option!

- Speakers? I guess some care about this. I think speakers on a monitor is a complete waste of materials, and they will never sound better than even cheap desktop speakers. But I digress...

- Reviews put this monitor's color reproduction as "slightly above average", but this PLS panel is eons above my BenQ TN gaming monitor when it comes to color clarity. It was a little hot in the reds when I first got it, but it's easy to cut down the red temp.

- Good menu options. PiP is also a great option!

- Decent backlight control (see CONS for a way to fix this issue).

CONS:

- The LED backlight doesn't handle high contrasting light/dark at once. When looking at a very white background on a webpage, my rotating pictures for the desktop background causes the monitor to over/under compensate every once in a while to adjust brightness.
However, you CAN fix this! Using the SmartControl Premium software included with the monitor, head straight to "Eco Power" and for the option "Bright Room" and "Dim Room", set both to 100%. This will turn off the annoying backlight issue. Also, you can adjust backlight brightness. I have mine set at 60%.

- The menu buttons aren't illuminated. I HATE trying to press the buttons and navigate in the dark. I have to use a flashlight to see what I'm pressing. FAIL.

- Response time is not "bad", but I can tell a difference between this and my BenQ TN display. Then again, apples-to-oranges comparison. Not fair to put an PLS against a TN panel's response times.
Playing games, it still looks alright.

CONCLUSION:
I quite like this monitor. More than I'm willing to admit, actually. Apparently you can get something better in this price range if you're willing to sacrifice options (especially USB 3.0 ports). Then again, in the "real world" - and after adjusting hotter colors - this display is gorgeous. Perhaps super finicky users who need extremely accurate colors might want to go somewhere else. Those people would likely look into the "higher end" models, I would think.

If you want super-duper quick refresh rates, then go for a gaming monitor. If you play games and are willing to sacrifice slow response time for better color and AMAZING resolution detail, then I recommend this monitor.

Also, go to the menu options as select "Faster" refresh rate settings. That will help.
I would wager most people won't really notice a difference either way.

SmartControl software note: If you are using dual displays and SLI, make sure the Philips is plugged into the first video card. Otherwise, SmartControl will recognize your second monitor as the "main", and it will block off adjustment options - even if you have the Philips selected in the top menu.
