This item possibly should be sold as a piece of luggage which happens to incorporate a lap-top computer slot into it.Before I go any further, I want to thank the reviewers who hold this item in such low esteem; that may have helped me to get this bag as a customer return from Amazon's "warehouse deals" at less than half of their "new" price.
Those who say it is too heavy, yes, may be correct; however, if you're going to roll it around this shouldn't matter too much.
Once the detachable handle/wheels frame assembly has been removed, the weight is cut down by about half, to about 3-4 lbs.
As for the quality of the leather, I personally thought it was good, thick, well tanned, sturdy and good smelling, with no visible flaws; may be others are used to more high-end animal hides and were looking for something more "exquisite" or something, I don't know...
The main detractor I would have is for the minimal amount of protection afforded to the computer along the top and on the upper thirds of the sides, where the zipper opens and closes on the lap-top compartment.
Of course, along the large flat sides of the computer, where the laptop compartment is sandwiched in between the other two other compartments, teh protection is far more than adequate.
The ends of the bag are padded fairly well also, up to the points where the zipper is, but they didn't really try to pad it around where the zipper opens and closes.
If I had designed it I would have sewn in some tubular shaped pads to each side and along the length of the zipper.
With our 17" Acer, it is a tight fit, and the computer housing presses firmly against the zippered area such that if the bag would be dropped or banged just wrong, or a hard object happened to fall on it, the computer could possibly be damaged.
This seems like an acceptable risk for those of us who plan to use the bag for car travel, hauling the computer and accessories in and out of hotel rooms, and using for carry-on luggage; but for checking luggage onto a plane I wouldn't recommend it unless you plan to be creative and craft your own padding for the aforementioned lean areas.
Other than that, the Zip -on/-off framework with the wheels and telescoping handle works acceptably well with the item I got. The handle did stick a little bit, but just a little bit of jiggling got it to extend, and it does open and close without causing me too much distress, and I am prone to bouts of manic frustration, so these statements are probably equivalent to words of abundant praise from more patient people.
Admittedly though, I did have my girl-friend do the unzipping and subsequent re-zipping, since I have been known to tear zippers asunder if they fail to operate flawlessly, so I can't give much of an assessment of the removable framework other than to say that she got it to work.
The other compartments are very neatly lined and compartmentalized, with holders for pens, pouches for accessories, etc. all very neat and organized in appearance. Very professional, in my amateur opinion.
Bottom line, if you can find an "Amazon warehouse deal" for $50, because someone was disappointed that it wasn't crafted of the finest leather known to man, you're spending your money much more wisely than you would be if you were to buy a $40 Targus or Case Logic brand nylon bag.
