Lenovo IdeaCentre Q190 Desktop (Silver) Review

I bought this for a photo booth. It was cheaper than the nettop I just built a month ago, and has more horsepower plus I didn't have to hassle with installing any hardware or installing Windows.

The size is perfect, it is much smaller than many of the alternatives and the attached DVD burner makes it more functional. I love the design for the attached burner. I dislike using optical media but for now it is still necessary and having the burner built in is far preferred to using an external. Slot-loading is a plus too since I have to mount the computer in a small space where there isn't much room for a tray to fully open.

It comes with a very nice mini keyboard which would have saved me another $20-$30 but I already own several of the rii mini keyboards. If I didn't, the included keyboard would suit my needs but as it is I will be using the rii keyboard because of the inclusion of function keys. For a photo booth operator, the mini keyboard is a huge plus. A full size keyboard and standard mouse would have to be set somewhere - it takes away some of the magic of the booth to see it being operated by a regular keyboard. Being able to walk around and control the functions of the booth with something that looks like a remote is more convenient and just looks better from the guest's perspective.

Here's where the fifth star came from for me: the included mounting bracket. It allows you to mount the bracket and then the computer quickly snaps in place with no tools. For me, this means swapping out a computer at an event would take seconds instead of minutes. This is huge when facing a computer failure at a live event and every second the guests are getting more impatient. When I opened the box and discovered this little gem I immediately ordered another computer from Amazon. I'm not kidding, I took my smart phone out, opened the Amazon app, found my order and placed another order before I even turned the thing on.

When I turned it on and set it up, I was pleasantly surprised by how quick and painless it was. Windows 8 plus Start8 meant I had the whole computer set up and ready to rock in under an hour. One of the easiest set-ups I've done. Not too much crapware to uninstall.

The computer itself is nice and zippy. No complaints on speed. I can't speak for how this machine would be as a media PC, but for a photo booth it is the perfect computer, 5 stars all the way.
