I had been waiting to upgrade my aging Q6600 setup for when Ivy Bridge came out, and when it finally did it was time to settle on a motherboard. After searching the various motherboard vendors I finally settled on this H77 full ATX motherboard, which, while it has its layout issues, has otherwise been a fine choice.I looked at how I use my computer, and I only run a single, good video card, and I planned to swap out my raid-10 with a raid-1 with a solid state drive for caching using Intel's SRT. The money I saved over a Z77 motherboard afforded me the SSD, and I can assure you that it's well worth the ticket price to get one. I rarely hear the hard drive these days and everything loads faster and smoother. The H77 and Z77 (along with the Z68) provides this feature, while the overclocking Z75 does not. I also realized, as you can imagine, that I don't need a heck of a lot of ports - only running three things that would need a SATA port, a USB hub provides all of the USB 2.0 connectivity that I need, and this motherboard comes with the header port to connect my front case USB 3.0 ports, so all set there. Nothing was especially difficult to connect or work with when installing the motherboard. The BIOS upgraded without incident using a USB stick.
First, the good: It's been up and running without a hitch since I installed it roughly a month ago. Everything works as advertised, which is primarily what I'm looking for in a motherboard. I chose to go with a separate SATA for speed and cost reasons, but there is an mSATA port which would likely work out quite well if you went that route. The Atheros LAN chipset, which I hadn't previously experienced first hand, has also run without incident.
Now, the not so good. Rear port layout is an issue with all of the Ivy Bridge motherboards, primarily because they want you to use the Lucid MVP technology, which the general assessment is hit or miss. So they provide a ridiculous amount of video connectivity options in the back where there should be USB ports or something similar. This board is in that same boat, with what I'd call a dearth of USB ports - simply a sign of the times. The next is the full x16 PCIe slot - PCIe 3.0 capable. If you run a dual-slot video card, as I do, it effectively stops you from using the x1 PCIe slot underneath it. If you were to run two video cards, depending on the length, you would likely run into issues trying to work with the SATA ports. Lastly, the choice of two PCI slots at the bottom of the board is hard to fathom - I'd much rather have seen them slide one of the PCIe x1 ports towards the bottom rather than letting it sit there unused.
