DoubleSight DS-230STA Monitor Flex Stand, Adjustable Height, Tilt, Swivel and Pivot

DoubleSight Flex Stand with Adjustable Height, Tilt, Swivel and Pivot for Monitor (DS-230STA) Review

I haven't written a lot of reviews but given how much time I spent researching monitor stands before actually deciding on this one I figured I would share my thoughts because it is such an awesome stand yet has so few reviews.

My condo has a computer nook built into one of the walls. It is basically a desk with walls on three sides. It's very wide but only has a depth of about 23.5". Just in case there is any confusion, depth here is referring to the distance from the edge of the desk where I sit to the back wall. The base of the monitor I was using before this stand was quite large dimensionally so I was only able to push the keyboard back so far before it ran into the base, leaving very little clearance between the bottom of the keyboard and the end of the desk. When I type I like being able to have my elbows comfortably on the desk. I also like being able to put a book between the keyboard and the end of the desk to aid in typing while looking at the book. The monitor stand I had prevented me from doing either of these things because of how much space it took up.

The main things I was looking for in a stand was 1) be desktop type, 2) not be too low, 3) the base not have too much depth, and 4) have a base that was extremely flat so I could push the keyboard onto it when I wanted extra clearance. One pattern on many desktop stands I noticed was that the depth of the base would be short, but the riser holding the crossbar attached to the monitors extended backwards (for balance I assume) which made the effective depth more than just the depth of the base itself because the riser prevents the base from actually being flush against the wall. I am happy to report this stand does not have that problem. The riser goes straight up from the base. There is a height adjustment knob on the back of the riser, however it protrudes only slightly further back, if at all, than the furthest part back of the base.

Doubletree offers several monitor mounts through Amazon. There is one extremely similar to this model, the DS-224STA (this stand is the DS-230STA if you didn't happen to notice before checking the reviews). I mention this because the 224 has many more reviews than this stand and if you're like me, you're extremely reticent to trust a product that only has one five-star review. I did a little research and according to DoubleSight's product page ([...]) the 230 is basically a reengineered version of their existing dual monitor stands (e.g. the DS-224STA) designed to be both taller and accommodate larger monitors. If you check out the negative reviews of the 224 the majority of them complain the 224 is 1) too short and 2) barely allows for angling when both monitors are 24". This stand solves both those problems. I have dual ViewSonic VX2450WM-LED 24-Inch monitors and they both fit comfortably without even having to mount them on the widest setting. Additionally, at the stand's maximum height the bottom of both monitors is 6" off the desktop. And if this still isn't enough for you can get a 3" height extender for $40. Now, the 230 does cost a bit more than the 224. It was around $145 when I bought it but looking at Amazon now it's closer to $160. Given what I have seen so far I would definitely be willing to pay $160 for this stand, especially considering that the 224 with the height extension would be about the same height as the stock 230 and cost more. The depth of the stand is only 9". Even with the height-adjustment knob on the back, that distance barely changes. Also, the base is flat enough to get a keyboard up onto it comfortably. The legs on my keyboard are pretty short, so if this is something you're looking for more than likely this stand will fit the bill.

There are other noteworthy things to mention about this stand. It's extremely solidly built. I estimate it weighs 15 or 20 pounds and it's extremely stable. I tested it by mounting one 24" monitor. Provided the arms are not put at too awkward of an angle the stand will easily hold one 24" monitor without tipping over. It also comes assembled, excepting the mounting brackets which need to be attached to the monitors before being attached to the stand. That makes sense though. Also, I like the way it looks. The pictures on Amazon to some degree make it look a little "industrial," for lack of a better word but it actually looks quite smooth and polished.

In closing, this stand met or exceeded all four of the requirements I described above, and then some. Even if you're shopping for dual-monitor stands on a budget consider paying a little extra for this stand because it's a quality product. If I ever do upgrade to a larger monitor set-up I will be sticking with this stand and upgrading it.
