Asus DDR3 1333 Intel - LGA 1155 Motherboards (P8C WS) Review

This board has finally replaced my old trusty A7V880 in a not-so-typical homeputer operating 7x24 and hosting multiple concurrent virtual machines along with home LAN services under Debian GNU/Linux.

Assembly is quite straightforward. One issue (possibly a one-off manufacturing slip) was that the bundled SATA-2 cables and Q-Connector made a disastrously loose fit compared to an older M3A-H, prompting me to discard the cables and spread out Q-connector pins manually. An E3 1270 v2 and 4x8G 1600 MHz Kingston ECC UDIMMs make a great combo with this board, even though the official QVL is lagging behind on large-capacity modules. No obtrusive VRM heatsinks so a Noctua NH-D14 fits in easily and there's no difficulty adding 30 mm DIMMs later on. The 8-pin ATX12V2 power socket accepts a single 4-pin ATX12V connector just as well. Diagnostics LEDs along with a plug-in POST card are a welcome addition, as are internal USB A-connectors.

Bus overclocking features appear to be locked out for Xeons along with multiplier override, leaving only the voltage adjustments and DRAM timing tweaks, largely useless alone. Perhaps the bundled DVD may offer more flexibility for Windows users. Non-turbo operating frequencies can be limited from above but not from below (1600 MHz floor) with SpeedStep. So, while the board may still look "desktopish", its scope for BIOS customizations is rather conservative and constrained by Intel CPU differentiation.

The old P8B WS BIOS issue with ECC support not showing up in DMI tables appears to be fixed in P8C WS. Whether any MCEs relevant to ECC RAM can actually be handled and logged correctly with this board remains to be seen - my mcelog is empty so far, even after downvolting the RAM in a fruitless attempt to induce a higher error rate.

Driver-wise, the 3.5 Linux kernel had no problems recognizing Panther Point MCH integrated peripherals. The LPC chip is a Nuvoton NCT6776F and can be used together with the w83627ehf module to monitor the system (lm-sensors) and control fans (fancontrol) using a variety of thermal sensors and both 3-pin and 4-pin fan cables. There is a DOS utility to flash the board, obviating the need for any Windows in maintenance.

Overall, I believe the board fills the niche for versatility, so neglected after 440BX. So, barring any future surprises on the bathtub curve, I won't hesitate to recommend it to those who knows what P3B-F was like.
