Lenovo Yoga 13 IdeaPad Elite Convertbale Ultrabook (tablet) 13.3" 1600x900 10 points Touch-Screen Laptop Intel Core i7-3517U 4GB 256GB SSD Windows 8 Review

I spent several months investigating various options for a new computer. Before I go further I have to state that I was not looking for a tablet or even a convertible when I considered the Yoga. I am a developer and need a fairly powerful workstation, and right now I feel the best solution is two devices: an extremely light, thin, portable solution for long flights and carrying around the house, and a more powerful workstation for doing my primary work which is development and authoring technical books.

I satisfied the "light and portable" option with an ASUS VivoTab RT. I have a review on my blog for that. The Lenovo I approached as an ultrabook with touch, and the tablet mode simply comes as a bonus.

With this purchase I was able to successfully replace an older Dell laptop that was almost 2" thick and weight 6 pounds. It had 8GB RAM and a "fast" hard drive and I run SQL Server 2012, multiple web servers, and Visual Studio 2012 in debug mode on it frequently. I was tired of lugging it around and wanted to go with something thinner and lighter. I narrowed it down to the Yoga.

The Yoga concerned me as a 13.3" laptop and also one with "only" 1600 x 900 and not full 1080p. I can say I was pleasantly surprised to find the smaller screen still "feels" large and the resolution is perfect. It is a crisp, clear display that I can work on all day long. What's even better is the keyboard is phenomenal. I have to warn you some people complain about the smaller right shift key so everyone isn't as satisfied as I am, but for some reason I took to the keyboard quickly and easily and found I can type almost 110 WPM with 100% accuracy based on online typing tests.

I chose this laptop as my "primary" device and it runs what my Dell did about 33% faster. While it does have a more recent processor (3rd generation instead of my 2nd generation Dell) it also boasts a Solid State Drive which makes it incredibly fast.

To drive my home system I invested in a Targus USB docking station and that worked perfectly, out of the box. I have two 1920 x 1080 21" monitors that I drive one from the Targus and the other from the HDMI out on the Yoga. I use the Yoga as a third screen, so now I have one extra screen that I didn't have before (I used to just close the laptop lid on my Dell when I docked it). I'm very pleased with the setup and just finished watching an episode of Battlestar Galactica on Netflix on one of the external monitors and it looked great.

This has completely replaced my Dell. Because it is so light I was able to invest in a portable 14" monitor so now I have a second screen when I'm on the road. I've written a 70 page chapter and thousands of lines of code on the new machine and couldn't be more pleased with the performance.

Finally, while I hardly ever use the full "tablet" mode, I certainly flip it and go into tent and/or presentation modes to take advantage of the touch capabilities. I used this to read a Kindle book the other day and on the plane use it to play games when I'm not using the keyboard.

Overall I'm incredibly pleased with the purchased and happy to be traveling much lighter ... I was able to eliminate my external keyboard and mouse by investing in this system. That's right, I'm over a week without even touching a mouse. I brought it with me on my last week long trip and never used it. The TouchPad on this laptop is incredible, just the perfect sensitivity and recognizes all of the gestures I need so I ended up tossing the mouse and don't miss it one bit. Even when writing books you'd be surprised how much I use the touch screen to run macros or change formatting (the new Office 2013 is very touch-friendly).

I give this a double thumbs up ... was more of a machine than I expected.
