With so many storage options available in the marketplace, CalDigit decided to create something different. The AV Drive was the first USB 3.0 drive designed for use specifically with the Mac platform. Like all CalDigit storage products, it features a sturdy die cast aluminum enclosure, gold plated connectors, and premium interface cables. Most importantly, the AV Drive features a direct-attach design derived from larger CalDigit RAID systems. This design allows the internal drive to attach directly onto the board itself, eliminating the need for cables that are typically required for data and power transfer. This design allows the AV Drive to be more reliable by eliminating possible points of failure.

I've used many professional storage solutions for work. These professional storage devices offer much better performance than plastic consumer units and better components for long term reliability.
My latest unit was a G-Tech G-DRIVE 4TB which was somewhat disappointing. It delivered decent performance in a classy aluminum chassis, however, the drive sometimes would crap out under heavy use. My speculation was lack of a fan in the G-DRIVE causing overheat issues. Calling G-Tech for support was another joke. Nothing but phone maze. I gave up and will be returning the G-DRIVE. In search for a comparable replacement, I was deciding between a LaCie d2 Quadra and CalDigit AV Drive. I needed something with good performance, reliability and support. After reading many positive reviews and referrals from co-workers on CalDigit products, I decided to give CalDigit a shot.

Upon opening of the package, the construction quality of the drive was quite reassuring. Its heftiness truly felt like a tank. A big plus! I also like the built-in fan to keep the drive from overheating. Last thing I need is another frozen drive in the middle of the transfer. I just can't afford the loss anymore.
Now, to the most important part, PERFORMANCE. The box claimed up to 145MB/s, my 3TB actually delivered a surprising speed. I got an amazing read speed of 184.9MB/s and write speed of 183.7MB/s (MacBook Pro mid-2012 running USB3.0). All I can say is that I have been nothing but impressed with this unit.

Overall, a great product. Very very fast performance. Solid construction that felt like it's built to last. I have used this AV Drive for 2 months and I am extremely pleased with it. I had recommended to 2 other co-workers to go with AV Drive and CalDigit will definitely be on top of my shopping list from now on.
