Intel Xeon W3680 Processor Review

Xeon W3680 and i7 980X are practically the same chip. The main difference between the two is ECC capability, which is disabled in i7 brand as it is marketing for home computing VS Xeon brand is marketing toward workstation/servers in commercial sector. ECC function provides stability that is crucial for data servers running 24/7 all year around. It's not an important feature for home computing. Generally speaking, ECC hardware costs more because it is mostly used by commercial sector.

Like i7 Xtreme series, W3680 is unlocked. So it makes overclocking super easy, all you need to do is change BIOS CPU Ratio (aka multipliers) to 30, you 'll get 4.0 GHz. 31=4.15, 32=4.3..etc. That is it, no need to mess with other settings at all, in and out of BIOS in less than 15 seconds. All locked CPUs, basically all none extreme edition and some Xeon are a pain in the @$$ to OC. It involves hours of tunings and countless restarts, yikes!

I'm currently running at 4.3 GHz on Asus P6X58D-E with Corsair H70 cooler, full load CPU temperature hovers around 80c in a 22c room temperature environment. I didn't need to mess with CPU voltage with this mobo, I left it on auto and it adjusts the voltage by itself. Your mobo and BIOS might be different.

Xeon is not listed as a supported CPU on my mobo Asus P6X58D-E. In fact, only workstation/server mobo would list Xeon as supported CPU. This goes back to ECC capability. Only workstation/server mobos have ECC feature. None ECC X58 mobos will not listed Xeon for that reason. But ECC modules such as Xeon and ECC RAM work fine on a none-ECC mobo, they just won't have ECC function. So it's sort of waste of money to put ECC hardware on a non ECC mobo. But currently W3680 costs around 600, and 850 for 980x. If you're shopping for 980x, then do some research on W3680 and you'll likely come to the same conclusion as mine.

My own benchmark. A rendering that took i7 950 (stock clock) 81 minutes to render, it took 36 minutes with this baby at 4.3 GHz. what an incredible upgrade, worth all 60,000 pennies!

Lastly, not all Xeon are unlocked and compatible with X58 boards. Do your own homework before spending 60,000 pennies.
