Sep 2011 I was looking around for a fanless, low-power PC to use as a networked media player. The fit-PC2 looked like it had everything. Some reviews said it could support HD audio (like Dolby TrueHD or DTS Master Audio) but it cannot. It does have digital audio out from a 3.5mm socket and the included cable has a coax connector (RCA or phono plug).

I bought the diskless fit-PC2 2GHz Atom processor and 2GB RAM. I fitted a solid state drive and installed Windows 7 (this added about $270 to the cost). With a solid state disk it truely is silent.

It can play DVDs but struggles on high-data rate sections (high detail or fast changing scenes). I wouldn't expect it to cope with Blu-ray movies. However, I use it as a music server. It's fantastic. Set up with iTunes 10 and with all my music transferred to it, no keyboard, mouse or screen, just an output to a local amplifier. It draws so little power, I leave it on most of the time and only shut it down when it will be unused for a long period. The front panel button is configured to hibernate/wake up.

It's connected to my network by wireless. I use VNC to remote into it when needed. I set up the built-in IR receiver but in practice I don't use it. On my Apple devices, I use the app "Remote" so I can browse the music library and play anything through the local amp or by Airtunes to remote speakers. Compared to a music-dedicated Mac mini it's smaller, quieter and uses less power. The case gets warm in use as I gather it's used as a heatsink. No problem.
