ATEN 4-Port USB 2.0 DVI KVMP Switch (CS1764A) Review

I don't write many product reviews, but when I was looking for a new KVM - my main requirement was that it work with my cordless backlit Logitech K800 keyboard which I am happy to say that it does! There are some other "features" on it though that are a little annoying leave me wanting more. Here are the pros and cons:

Pros:
1. Works with Logitech K800 illuminated keyboard!!
2. ATEN technical support is excellent
3. DVI / sound support

Cons:
1. Switching is somewhat slow (approx 5-7 seconds before I get keyboard or mouse response) after display comes up.
2. Power on Detection feature wakes up a sleeping computer
3. Mouse emulation does not support more than a 3-button mouse (forward and back buttons do not work, unless you disable mouse emulation and make it a pass-through USB port)-which makes the switching time even longer.

The Power On Detection "feature" allows the KVM to automatically switch from a machine that is powered off to a machine that is currently powered on. This feature is ANNOYING - as when you put a computer to sleep, it reawakens the computer again when the KVM automatically switches to a new port. I have a powered laptop docking station that the switch always believes is on even when the laptop docked to it is turned off and will automatically revert to this port. I was given a workaround for this - to disable computer re-wake when the mouse or keyboard input is received, but then I can't re-wake when I actually want to through these devices.

I was looking at this or the IOGear 4-port switch, but even the IOGear tech support guy said that support for my keyboard was a toss-up as they did not generally support wireless keyboards/mice.

I'm happy that my keyboard works on it, but hope that a new firmware revision gives you the option of disabling this power on detection feature and the mouse emulation supports using more of your mouse buttons. The technical support folks have been very responsive and their explanations are helpful.
