Acer Aspire V3-731-4695 17.3-Inch Laptop (Midnight Black) Review

I love this laptop. I was able to set it up and connect to my wireless network quickly. It has run smoothly since. The display is gorgeous, and they keyboard has a nice feel. It obviously comes with bloatware that needs to be removed, but I don't know of any laptop that doesn't. I purchased this to replace my previous Acer Aspire that I have had since 2005. The only reason I am replacing the 2005 laptop is because the screen is starting to go out. Other than the screen going out, I did not have a single problem with my previous Acer for 7 years (used daily for work and internet). I hope this one holds out just as long.

SEAGATE ST4000DX000 Barracuda 4TB 7200 RPM 128MB cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5 internal hard drive (Bare Drive) Review

I purchased from two of these items from XBR Depot about 9 months ago. They advertised it then and still advertise it now with the Seagate model number of an internal 4TB drive that to this date has never been released to market. XBR Depot is buying the external Seagate 4TB drive and taking the drives out of the enclosures which then voids the warranty. Not only that, the external drives are selling now for around $160 but look at their price.

When I bought mine 9 months ago, the externals had been selling for around $160 but had sold out. XBR Depot charged me $450 per drive and I had to dispute with Amazon to get most of my money back. I had to contact Seagate to prove to Amazon that Seagate hadn't taken the advertised model number to market yet and Amazon made it seem like they'd take this product off the site. They never did - it's still been selling on Amazon for 9 months or more even though it's mis-advertised.

These drives are good drives, but XBR Depot's practices are misrepresentative and in my non-lawyer opinion illegal. I'm surprised that Amazon allows XBR Depot to sell on Amazon.com at all...

Plantronics Savi W430 Wireless Headset - Silver/Black Review

I got this headset a few days ago and am so far not impressed- maybe I just have not worked out the kinks yet, if so I will update later.
First off the charging base:
It requires some force to get the headset in so that the charging parts will connect and you have to look at the light to be sure it connects. This means it is so tight that you have to hold the base down with one hand while you extract the headset. After doing this once I could see that the base had come apart slightly at one of the seams.
A major reason that I got this was to avoid fumbling with a headset when I get a call- I sometimes miss the call while trying to get the headset on my ear and hoped this would help. Not!
The volume buttons are on the part that goes behind the ear. I find this makes them hard to push without dislodging the headset unless I use 2 hands. Even then they are hard to push and aside from the faint tone you don't get any tactile feedback that you have indeed pushed it. I don't expect to need to change the volume much but you have to hold the vol- button down for a few sec to mute the headset something I do routinely because I am on conference calls.
I hesitated to get this because the headset reminded me of their Voyager pro series and I found that to be uncomfortable over time but I have worn this for an hour or so and it is not the kind I will forget that I am wearing but it is not uncomfortable. The ear pieces are slightly different from the voyager pro series.
The range seems good for my purposes- better than bluetooth. I was able to walk out in my back yard and at the part where I am furthest from the base with the most walls between me and the base it skipped sligthtly but did not disconnect me (i only tried this once so far).
I am using a win XP PC with Skype 5.8 and several times that I have gone to make a call it has told me that there was a problem with my audio (forget the exact message) and this is fixed by unplugging the transmitter and plugging it back in. I have not sorted out the cause of this problem but this is more fumbling that I was trying to avoid.
Another time when I picked it up to use it I was told the battery was dead and got some horrible screeching feed-back like noise. I put it back on the base for a second and picked it up and the battery was miraculously fully charged(i.e. clearly it was charged but told me it wasn't) and the screeching was gone but there was an echo-y tinny quality to the sound from the caller and the sound they heard from me that made it unuseable- I had to hang up and use my cell headset on my ipad. I have not had it long enough to figure these problems out and I may not as I am inclined to send it back. I am not sure if I am just unlucky and got a defective unit but I don't have time to waste trouble shooting something that has some fundamental shortcomings as it is.
I really wanted the 440 but amazon did not have it in stock and plantronics has a terrible return policy so I did not want to buy it there. I may just go back to my wired hedset (Plantronics MX500i 3-in-1 Headsetwhich worked great until my dog sat on it!

Dell Inspiron i1764-6075OBK 1764 17.3-Inch Laptop (Obsidian Black) Review

UPDATE:::: 3+ Weeks since I got this.... More bulky softwares(even ones that run during start up) / games / videos have gone in, but the performance is absolutely the same. Audio capabilities of this laptop is simply stunning.... I have a HDTV and a Sony Home theater system. When I connect this laptop to the TV and listen to MP3 songs, the audio output is just amazing.... Made me feel like dancing to the rhythm.... I am comparing this with a 2 year old Gateway laptop that I own (does not have a HDMI connectivity, so use VGA Cables instead... So I understand that I'm not comparing apples with apples :-), but still.... ). I don't use this laptop primarily for gaming... But I did try playing Tales of the Monkey Island in complete high settings, and the video and audio were awesome. Connect it to your HDTV and enhance the experience.....

I went and got this from a BestBuy store near my place.... I actually got to compare it with the core i3 laptops.... I restarted all the systems and then tried opening the programs at the same time and clocked them.... I5 has a way more superior load time as compared to the i3 and Core 2 duo systems. Note that BB has the same softwares installed on all of its laptops (as long as the OS is the same).

I loved the large screen... My requirement was a laptop to be a desktop replacement that would mostly be moved just within my home... So the weight of this product didn't bother me much. If your main requirement is mobility, DO NOT go for this laptop... It can be quite heavy....

After hearing loads of negative reviews about Win 7, I didn't expect too much out of it... However, I am beginning to like it a lot... It has some cool features that I find real user friendly.... Specially the shortcut tray on the top of your screen.... Its so customizable and handy... U don't have to minimize your open windows to access it... just take the pointer to the top portion of the screen and hold for a second or two, and it shows up... No more clumsy icons on the desktop.....

Aero theme on Windows 7 looks pretty stunning too.... Note that this takes a lot of memory though... The configuration on this system has no problems handling it.... I have loaded my system with loads of softwares and still the boot time is amazingly fast... Shutdown is even better....

Battery life is pretty good for a laptop with such huge screen size....

One last thing is this: Function keys are by default set to be used with the "Fn" key only.... For example pressing the F1 key on your keyboard would open up the chose monitor option and not help on a particular software..... In order to do that you will have to press the "Fn" + the F1 key... I felt this to be an annoyance, as I use Alt + F4 to close windows. This wouldn't work as F4 is assigned as a Mute button and the laptop mutes the sound instead....

However, I recently realized that this functionality could be changed by going into the BIOS. Just meddle around the various tabs and you should be able to find that option.... Once you change that to default to Function keys and not Multimedia keys.... everything would be perfect (at least it was for me :) )

Good luck with any laptop that you decide to buy....

Dell XPS XPS13-1500sLV 13-Inch Ultrabook Review

I am a big fan of Dell laptops and my previous one was the XPS 13 which I like a lot but had issues with it while writing, the cursor will jump to a previous location just like that, and also got the tingling electrical vibration from the keypad while charging it. So I decided to give this one a try. Had problems with it since I got it, the must typical issue with this model seem to nbe the Network card, Dell technicians are very helpful and they do seem know a lot, but the guy they sent to replace the card didn't sseem to knowleable about it. Before changing the network card, it was not reading the network at home or anywhere I went. After changing the card it was better but not perfect, I had to keep loging out and in in order for the darn thing to respond when I click on any icon. After many calls to Dell tech. (Nice guys from India) I had to reset back to the factory settings, reinstalled all the software again and so far so good. Note that not having the DVD drive I had to purchase the external one, It doesn't have HDMI so I purchased an adapter for it. The picture is not as great as the XPS 13, which is beutiful, but it isn't bad. I did purchased the one with 256GB SSD, since I need all the storage space I can have. It does tun on and off very fast, about 5 seconds.
I must admit that my first 12" Dell laptop had been the less problematic one so far. They are not building them like they used to.
Once you fix the network card issues, the laptop works great (at list so far.) Not sure why Dell don't take care of this issue when building them, reading reviews online this looks like a big problem with this model.
