Creative ZiiSound DSx Wireless Subwoofer for ZiiSound Modular Speaker Systems Review

The DSx is a compact subwoofer designed to add extra bass to the D3x or D5x speaker system. It measures about 8.75"w x 8.75"h x 11.25" deep, and weighs just over 10 lbs. I tested the DSx with a D3x speaker over a period of several weeks, streaming audio from computers and phones, and generating some test tones for frequency checks.

The only wired connection is to AC power. The DSx connects to the main Dx speaker wirelessly. I added the DSx subwoofer to a D3x speaker, which involves first clearing all existing links on all the speakers in the system, putting the primary speaker into Link mode, then linking the DSx and any additional D3x speakers. It's a little bit of an irritation to have to relink everything just to add a single speaker, but it's not something you generally do frequently, so I don't consider it a major detraction from the user experience.

The DSx subwoofer has 2 controls located on the rear of the unit: a Link button to connect to the D3x main speaker, and a Bass Level rotary knob. This knob controls the volume of sound that the DSx produces. (Hint: start out at a low setting ... the DSx is capable of producing very loud bass.)

A white LED at the top right of the front panel lets you know that the DSx is on and active. When the system has been inactive for 10 minutes, it goes into standby mode and the LEDs extinguish. Reestablishing a Bluetooth link brings them out of standby within a couple of seconds.

To complete a description of the DSx design, the left and right sides feature round cloth covered (that seem to be non-removable) drivers, and the entire front panel is covered with the same black cloth (also non-removable). A small ZiiSound badge sits at the bottom of the front. The non-cloth surfaces are a black matte finish. The bottom has rubber feet to protect the surface it's sitting on.

For general listening to streaming audio and MP3s, the DSx is a great enhancement to the ZiiSound D3x system. While the D3x alone provides a reasonable amount of bass for general casual music listening, the DSx gets you to "full range" sound frequency. The DSx produces bass down to about 45 Hz in my testing, and that's clean, tight bass. This is a hallmark of non-ported subwoofer design: they are sometimes not as loud, but the bass is generally less distorted and cleaner. Many inexpensive subwoofers don't go this low, and many more expensive subwoofers don't produce the quality of bass that the DSx does.

So for a simple punchlist of hits and misses:

Hits:

Compact size. At 9x9x11 roughly, this little subwoofer can be placed just about anywhere unobtrusively. (Not that you'd necessarily want to conceal it. The black matte/black fabric finish looks just fine if you want to leave it in view.)

Wireless operation. I have a full wired home theater system, with cables running and hanging everywhere, and the ZiiSound system with a D3x and DSx subwoofer. Guess which one I like dealing with better. (Right! ... the wireless system.)

Good value. The DSx isn't cheap, but for the price, it is well made and provides very good quality sound.

Cranks out a lot of good bass. I keep the Bass Level knob at about 1/3, and that gives just the right amount of bass for my music listening.

Misses:

The whole linking process is a little annoying, but fortunately you don't typically do it that often.

Crossover may be a little high. Typically you would want to crossover the sound from the main speaker to the subwoofer at about 80 Hz to avoid any ability to place the source of the sound (sound below 80 Hz is difficult to localize). When listening to music, I can definitely hear the low frequency sound coming from the DSx, so I'm surmising that the crossover is set higher, perhaps 100-120 Hz. This is not a huge problem, but if you place it on the opposite side of the room from the main Dx speaker, it may be a little disorienting to hear the low frequency sound coming from an alternate location.

Conclusion:

The DSx subwoofer provides a very good complement to the D3x or D5x speaker systems. While those speakers produce very good sound quality on their own, the lower range is a little rolled off, which is not surprising since good low frequency sound takes some space to create. The DSx subwoofer, while compact, adds plenty of clean bass down to about 45 Hz. It's attractive, discreet, and priced reasonably. If you like your D3x or D5x speaker, the DSx just might make you love it.
