I have been using Brother LED printers for years. I should preface this review with the fact that I am a computer consultant with advanced knowledge of computer equipment and printers. I was impressed with this unit's features and price. Out of the box this unit worked flawlessly. The machine is rather large, but does not take up a lot of room. It's footprint is very compact for a color laser printer.I went through a battery of tests to verify that all functions worked. There were no problems. Set up was a breeze. I have several computers on the network and they all connected without problem. This unit is essentially the same as the 9325cw only without the annoying wireless networking option. I felt it was not worth the extra cost as I don't consider wireless printers to be reliable or fast enough for a small office. Wireless network printing gets me lots of calls because it constantly has to be reset and reconnected every time the router is reset or reprogrammed. It is cheaper and more reliable to hard wire it into the network or use USB and share the device. Laptops can still connect to this unit without wires through the WiFi network.
I have scores customers who have purchased this unit on my advice and have many years of great service from them. One thing I personally like about the machine is the fact it has remained largely the same for the last several years. I mean why change a great product for dubious features? This is a solid design and a reliable machine. It is a great work-group machine for 4-6 users in a small office and is excellent for a home office.
I find the print quality to be great for everyday color printing. The print engine is fast and reliable. The cost of genuine brother toner and drums is very reasonable. The starter toner cartridges are a bit of a joke, but it keeps the delivery cost of the machine low. I have a Brother HL3040cn printer that uses the same size toner (Thank you Brother for not forcing a 'new' size toner cartridge). I have refilled the cartridges 3 times so far without any real problems (saves 50%). You can refill the starter toner cartridges by installing a flag gear that you can purchase online. One little trick that I learned about these machines is the toner will often times report being low or out when there is still about 25% toner still left in the cartridge. By simply resetting the flag gear (requires a screwdriver and instructions you can find online) you can get the rest of the use out of the toner. Whenever I purchase a color laser printer or AIO, we purchase a second set of toner, along with 1 extra black cartridge. That way we always have toner ready, and it gives me time to refill the empty ones. (Make sure you purchase the flag gears for the starter cartridges). After you reset the flag gears, or install them and reset them, you must also tell the printer you have new cartridges (a simple process again, instructions online or will be included with purchase of toner refill). Toner is very reasonable ($30-$50 new or re-manufactured) and widely available. To refill the cartridges is even cheaper ($40 to refill all 4 and the black twice) and fairly straightforward.
I used to recommend HP to my customers for their print needs. Not any more with HP off-shoring its lucrative printer manufacturing to China. HP printers are no longer competitive, in my opinion, to Brother color laser product. HP quality has gone down, programmed obsolescence (different size toner for every minor model change) and short product life (in 2-3 years HP printers just fail and become un-repairable). It's no longer even a question NOT to purchase HP printers. Too bad HP you sacrificed short term profits for a satisfied customer base who now use different product.
This unit performed as stated in its specs. I won't get into the details as that is outside the scope of this review. When loading the software, I opt out of installing the 'Paperport' software for scanning and OCR. I never liked it and it uses proprietary image formats so it makes document interchange difficult. I use the full version of Acrobat for creating PDF from scanned document. The software overall works as stated and has built in features to create PDF. It is assumed you are not an idiot so read the instructions and you won't have any problems, or have your IT guy properly set up and configure the device and you won't have any issues.
Paper handling is good and we have very few jams. Please use a decent quality paper as cheap paper glazes pickup rollers and feeds and jams or wrinkles more. Your printer will last longer if you use decent quality paper.
The ADF (automatic document feeder) works great, again using good quality paper makes a lot of difference in long-term performance. It can take up to 50 pages with little problem. You have a choice of using the letter size flatbed option for poor quality or damaged paper instead of the ADF. The pickup feed on this is a wear and tear item and if you do a lot of scans, that may need to be replaced in a year or two. This can be installed by a competent IT guy or a handy owner.
This is a superior product across the board. I have over a 20 years of experience with Brother products. I have been recommending them for the last 10 years. My customers report lower print costs, reliable service and features that meet their needs. This is my 4th color laser product for my own office, all of my old brother printers are still working and reliable. You cannot go wrong with this device if it is what you need. This product is no exception.
