CybertronPC Shockwave GM1213E Desktop (Black) Review

I received my Amazon email today stating that my Cybertron pc would be arriving on Monday; it has already shipped. I ordered it very early Saturday morning. Before clicking to submit my order, I did much research on Cybertron and its other models and what I could find on the Shockwave GM1213h and felt this particular model will give me the best bang for the buck for my needs. I am not a gamer, however, I need a strong system for my graphics, websites, and photography use. (I do music recording on another system - an Asus Windows 7 laptop.) There were no reviews here yet, and not all the specs are listed, so I had to do some digging to find what I wanted to know.

I discovered that this same Cybertron tower is offered by Sears, and for the same price (actually $2 more). I mention this because I found more specs listed on their site; this was extremely helpful in making my decision. On their listing it states that the power supply is 650W, and also that the speed of the 16GB of RAM is 1600MHz - also that there are two memory slots. The PSU wattage and RAM speed were very important to me. I also learned more about the AeroCool case on other sites - and found more photos - and am impressed with its overall design. I have also read reviews that speak of Cybertron's outstanding customer service.

With all the info that I gathered I felt quite confident in purchasing this desktop. I have no need for the keyboard (I have a Sidewinder with red back lighting that I LOVE) and my wireless mouse is just fine. It's the tower I am buying. It's looking like the one possible upgrade in the future may be the dedicated video card; that remains to be seen. I am not fond of Windows 8, however, it becomes more acceptable with the addition of the little free utility "Start Menu 8" which gives it more of a Windows 7 interface. (I installed this on my Acer netbook and it made a huge difference!)

Since there are no reviews for this tower yet, I thought it could be helpful to put up this review right away. When my machine arrives and I get it up and running I will add to my comments here. I am very excited about this computer!

UPDATE September 15 2013:
My Cybertron "Mechatron" (the name of the model of AeroCool case) GM1213H arrived Monday 9/9 before noon. That was FAST! The package was double boxed and was extremely well packaged within the inner box. No peanuts either. They use foam blocks, and it was a nice, snug fit.

A few details about the components which were slightly different than the specs listed on the Sears listing: Power Supply is an Ultra 600-watt, and the number of slots in the motherboard is 4, with two sticks of 8 GB Super Talent 1600 MHz RAM.

More info on the components in my tower:
* Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 ATX DX10 AM3+ dual Bios, PCI-Express, USB 3.0 & 2.0, HDMI, 4 memory slots (max 32GB)
* CPU: AMD FX-6300 hexa-core 3.5 GHz (FX-Series Six-Core)
* RAM: 2 x 8GB 1600 MHz = 16GB Super Talent
* PSU: Ultra 600-watt
* HDD: Western Digital Caviar Blue 7200 rpm 1T 64MB cache
* Video Card: Dedicated PNY GeForce GTX 650, mini HDMI (mini HDMI to HDMI adapter in accessory bag), DVI, VGA
* WiFi Card: Tenda 150Mbps Wireless PCI adapter
* Case: AeroCool "Mechatron" model - Black and red, fan controls panel with red LEDs in front (three speeds for each of six fans), fans and ventilation grills on left side, top, bottom, back, and front. Left side opens easily - two screws, slide an inch and lift off. There is a total of seven or eight fans in here. Blue LED power button on top/front, along with two USB 3.0 slots. Magnetic screen/filter that attaches to bottom. Lights up red at each side of front bottom.
* Optical Drive: LG
* OS: Windows 8 Core with backup CD, OEM with Cybertron label. Product key on sticker on upper right side of case.
* Other: CDs (drivers, etc.), docs, cords, adapters, Logitech MK120 wired keyboard and mouse
* Software: Windows 8 Core installed but not activated, Avast anti-virus, minimal freeware utilites. No bloatware.

PROS:
* FAST, powerful, efficient, quiet. My experience is that it is quiet for the all that is running in here - especially all the fans. And it is much more quiet than my previous tower.
* Wonderful tech support. I called in the next day to talk about some of the components so I was clear on the installed hardware. I never felt rushed or like the guy wanted to get off the call, and my questions were answered very kindly and well. I talked to the same tech a few more times this last week (as will be noted later), and had the same experience of helpfulness and care.
* I love the AeroCool Mechatron case. When the pc is powered up there are just the right amount of lights. :) The side panel comes off extremely easily. And inside ... wow! Talk about clean and tidy. Great wire dressing! I love the amount of ventilation grilling and all the fans. Two USB 3.0 ports on top in front by the power button, and many more USB ports in the back.
* Windows 8. Yes, even Windows 8 is growing on me. I have it on an Acer netbook (purchased from Amazon), so I was already used to it and learned about the workarounds for the metro tiles which I don't care for. I'm using a freeware Start Menu alternative, so no problem there. Everything else about Windows 8 so far I have no issues with, and I must say, it is extremely fast loading.
* FAST
* SMOOTH
* Dreamy

CONS:
* None! For my purposes, this configuration is going to take care of me well. Perhaps in the future I will elect to add more RAM, but 16GB is just fine at the moment. And down the line I may want to upgrade the video card, but I think the GeForce GTX650 will be fine for now. I have read it is a decent upper-end mid-range card, kind of bang for the buck. It gets good ratings on Amazon and Newegg. I am not a gamer, so I don't require the hottest, latest gaming video card, though doing much web design, photography, and graphics, I do need reasonable quality. I know this is better than what I had on the old desktop, so I'm good for now.

NOTES:
My Windows 8 Core did not activate - several tries - so I contacted tech support and the tech guy I worked with (same man whom I spoke with about components in the beginning) worked with me to get this solved. He had me call Microsoft which I did. I talked with three people there and in the end they could not activate it for me. Back to tech support. They gave me a new key and a Microsoft url for an online upgrade to Windows 8 Pro. That went smoothly till activation. Strangely, it didn't activate. I knew tech was behind me and it would be solved ... but I went ahead and sought out more info in the My Digital Life (MDL) online forum - a great tech forum. I posted my experience and was given a workaround by a tech forum member. It was easy and worked like a charm! So, thanks to Cybertron tech support and a knowledgeable tech at MDL, I'm upgraded to Windows 8 Pro and that issue is behind me. I was extremely pleased with the support from both places.

I am not using the Logitech keyboard and mouse and will pass it on to someone. I love my Sidewinder keyboard with red backlit keys (purchased months ago from Amazon) and I like MS wireless mouses.

I may add more info later as I get deeper into using the Cybertron. I am still installing software, copying files over, etc. I've got Thunderbird configured and all my email and address book info imported. I figured out a trick to easily get my email accounts (all 13!) set up - Thunderbird does not import email account settings from Outlook Express.

OVERALL: I love my Cybertron tower! Tech support is friendly and helpful - and is lifetime and free. All is smooth and quiet. This thing is a little rocket! Worth every cent and more.
