I purchased this laptop at a Wal-Mart about a month ago, the only difference is the one I have is windows 8. The laptop loads Facebook and YouTube in a literal snap, even with League of Legends (A computer game) running. The laptop has a great keyboard as well. the keyboard flows nice and easy and the keys are spaced beautifully. the qwerty keyboard has the normal row of numbers at the top however there is no number pad (but if there was the keys would be ridiculously small). The track pad is responsive and at max sensitivity you can be wearing a glove. I have had absolutely no issues with the track pad. With 2.4 Ghz, 4GB of ram (easily expandable to at least 8 GB but there is only 1 slot so you must buy and 8 GB card), and Intel HD graphics, you really can't go wrong with this attractive laptop. I spent a long time making the decision to buy a IronKey Personal D200 8GB USB thumb drive and I'm happy I did. The IronKey thumb drives work flawlessly on Windows, Mac, and Linux. If you're a frequent traveler who doesn't always travel with their own equipment or if you have different platforms/OS at work and at home then this is an important consideration. For me, personally, a thumb drive that didn't have cross-platform security features would be useless.

All of the encryption is handled on the drive itself in Hardware (you can read about the technical details on IronKey's website) so nothing is transferred to the host PC and that makes it less vulnerable to attacks. This may not sound like a big deal but google "secure usb memory hacked" and read some of the stuff you find. The IronKey drives are FIPS 140-2 Level 3 Certified. Most of the competitors seem to be level 1 or level 2 certified. Level 3 adds requirements for preventing access to the cryptographic secrets held within the module.

It's well-built and waterproof so it should stand up well in physically demanding environments (like your pockets). It self-destructs after 10 failed attempts so you can be pretty sure your data is safe. And when I say self destruct I really do mean that. It's not usable at all and you'll have to buy a new one to replace it. I think the Basic model may offer a reset option instead but I'm not 100% sure.

Ironkey offers a couple of different models the Basic and the Personal and each comes in a D and S variant. The S has SLC Flash Memory while the D has MLC Flash Memory. SLC Flash is faster, will last longer, and has a wider operating temperature. For consumer use and better value the D variants seem to be perfectly fine.

The Personal and the Basic are identical except for some extra software that is available for use on the Personal on Windows only. These include programs for:

-Support for using the Ironkey as one of the factors for VeriSign Identity Protection (VIP). If you've used an RSA SecureID token then you're familiar with the process. Companies like Geico, eBay, Paypal, T-Mobile, AOL, and others support VIP. The list isn't huge but hopefully it'll keep growing.
-A portable installation of Firefox so that you don't leave any traces on the host computer.
-IronKey Identity Manager which is a local program that manages passwords. (Like Keepass or Roboform)
-IronKey Secure Sessions (an IronKey fork of Tor anonymizer which uses IronKey private servers) for use with the onboard Firefox. It's free for the first year.

Overall I couldn't be more pleased. I was evaluating the possibility of finding a drive with biometric (fingerprint) support but they seemed to be either too expensive, too flaky/unreliable/gimmicky or both.

USA Filco Ninja Majestouch-2, Tenkeyless, NKR, Linear Action, Keyboard FKBN87ML/EFB2 Review

For years I have been using rubber-dome type keyboards. They simply are all that's available. Then, not that long ago, I met up with a group of people at work that were into the mechanical keyboards. That was it, I had to get one. This was my first.

The technical details section above has a problem. Since this is a "linear" keyboard it has Cherry MX Black switches. Search for "Mechanical Keyboard Guide" on the web and you'll find a good description of what that means.

I was a little concerned that this might not actually have much of a clicking sound, being linear. It actually does have a satisfying click when the keys are fully depressed. You may not always need to press the key down all the way, but when you do it does make a pleasing noise. This sound is nothing like the MX Blue switches (not nearly as obnoxious).

Construction quality is amazing. It has been a long time since I've felt a keyboard as dense or as heavy. The key layout feels a little more compact than my old Key Tronic 104, but even with my big hands it is very easy to operate.

I love the "ninja" style keys. I don't look at the keyboard much anyway. For those times that I do it is nice that the printing is on the front of each key. I like being able to remove keys in order to clean the keyboard, or even replace keys with special ones. MX switches allow you to do both.

Despite all this I actually prefer the spring weight and tactile feel of MX Brown swithes for general use (typng and gaming) of the "Tactile" keyboards. I may be returning this one in order to go that way. Everyone has their own preference. If you know someone with one of these keyboards to try out, you should jump on the chance.

ZyXEL 8-Port GbE PoE+ Unmanaged Switch (GS1100-8HP-240W) Review

I was looking for a future proof switch that supported POE+. Unfortunately, one of the Trendnet ones I purchased, while it boasted POE+, out of 4 POE ports, only 2 were POE+.

This switch TRULY does have POE+ on all 8 ports for a maximum power of 240 watts.

After I plugged in this device, I tested ALL 8 ports with POE cameras. Every single port functions as promised. Here are some items:

Pros:

1) ONLY 8 port POE+ switch that can deliver up to 240 watts of POE power for such a bargain price
2) Power supply is built in and it uses a normal cable. Others use the awful non-standard plug that does not work well with UPS's, power strips, etc.
3) Works as promised
4) Gigabit speeds as tested

Cons:
1) Fan is LOUD, but I can live with this.

I do recommend this switch. For some reason, I have had good luck with ZyXEL products where others have had issues.

I ordered my Alienware M15x through the Dell website on 12/3/2009. Delivery occurred on 12/18/2009, which was the original order anticipated build completion date. Nice! The laptop is replacing a home-built custom quad-core Cosmos gaming PC.

During the purchase process, I opted for the RAM upgrade to 4GB @ 1333MHz, upgraded the video card to the 260m (and got a $50 Dell promo gift card from this), got the 1080p screen, and upped the hard drive to 320GB. I subscribe to Steve Job's notion that Blu-Ray is a bag of hurt, so I stuck with the DVD/CD slot burner.

Performance-wise, the M15x is Sea Biscuit. I've thrown several games at it, from Crysis (silky-smooth at high resolution), WoW, Torchlight, Fallout 3, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Half-Life 2, Sins of a Solar Empire, and Company of Heroes. All ran flawlessly, at max or near-max settings. The standard Core i7 1.6GHz (2.8GHz turbo) cuts through these applications like nothing I've seen. While I enjoyed overclocking my custom desktop PC, this machine doesn't really need it. It's greased lightning right out of the box.

Pros:

I liked the price point. I knew I was getting a great machine for the money, and what I spent matches what I received.

Weight. This is a desktop replacement, so I expected some heft. I like the fact that this thing has some meat to it. If I wanted a light, take-anywhere laptop, I would have bought a netbook.

Alienware effects/polish/workmanship - worth the price of admission. This is a beautiful machine.

Dell's service. Anytime a company underpromises and overdelivers, I'm a happy camper. The M15x arrived way ahead of schedule, packaged professionally, and came out of the box ready to roll.

My cons are pretty similar to other reviewers:

- screen is really reflective, but playing in a darker room mitigates this.

- touchpad. I don't know who was driving the boat when they decided on this particular hardware. It's not that bad, but it's not great either. Onscreen movement is pretty herky-jerky, even after software update. Mouse-users won't bother with it.

After years of desktop machines and business laptops, this is my first personal laptop, and start-to-finish, it's been a great experience. It's easily replaced my workhorse desktop for all my uses. I will gladly buy Dell/Alienware again down the road. Can't recommend it enough.

Lenovo Y580 15.6-Inch Laptop (Dawn Grey) Review

Got this to replace my problematic Alienware M15x. It had the best specs for the price and I'm extremely satisfied by it. I don't feel like a bought a cheap product. The style of it is decent enough not really fancy or cheap though pretty much all plastic. Performance matches what it should and runs any current game perfectly fine (BF3, Guild wars 2, Skyrim, Call of duty)

Speakers seem to be very loud, probably louder than my alienware was.

Keyboard is a hit or miss, It is smaller because of the added number pad which some people might love and some might not like. I get mixed up hitting things by the number pad on accident but I have to say overall after getting used to it the number pad is great to have. Trackpad seems to work fine, I don't use it much though

Screen is the 1366x768 res which I was fine with, I mean I would prefer the higher resolution but I haven't come accross any time where I miss the pixels really, I would rather use the money towards something else like an SSD.

Software wise there really wasn't much crapware at all thankfully, most of lenovo's software seems to be useful and not interfering.

Battery life seems like to be around 3 hours which isn't to off for a gaming laptop, optimus helps keep it cool too. Weighs a bit over 5lbs and its really not that bad, its comfortable on my lap during normal surfing.

The device never really seems to feel to hot, the vent area is right above the WASD keys which you can feel a bit but not much. According to HWmonitor my temps have reached 90C though when I was playing guild wars 2, though I didn't notice and it didn't slow though it does seem a bit hot, it idles in the high 40's though which is cool enough.

Don't regret getting it one bit though, i've had no real issues at all.
