From what I've read, "preliminary testing" suggests these gold archival quality DVDs will last a hundred years. By contrast, standard DVD media varies in longevity, on the order of perhaps 5-25 years, depending upon the environment and manufacturer (and the average user can't accurately predict how long a given standard DVD will last). I selected MAM-A (formerly Mitsui)'s Gold Archive DVD-R media to store my electronic medical records, where longevity is very important.

I burned 4 of these DVD-R disks using Mac OS X 10.4.8 and Apple's Disk Utility at 8x speed with no problems, on a Power Mac G5 (Quad). I use the factory DVD drive that came with the Mac. All 4 passed verification of the burn.
