ASUS Essentio CM6870-US-3AB Desktop (Black) Review

I bought this PC to serve as the base for a home media system as well as everyday computing for my wife. I added a small (120 GB) SSD as the boot drive and turned the included 2 TB drive into storage for HD video from the Ceton InfiniTV 4 PCIe tuner card (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003B4VLJQ) and I am very happy. Windows Experience Index of 6.5 (out of 7.9) and the limiting factor is the on board Intel 4000 graphics. Processor and memory score in the high 7 range. After installing the SSD, cold boot to password prompt is less than 12 seconds. The on board video is more than adequate for what I want to do, but there is a PCIeX16 slot available if you want to add your own video card. I have checked processor and memory use while recording a show in HD from Media Center and it was barely noticable, processor about 3% and memory usage 2.68 GB (of the 15.9 usable installed). Note that the included optical drive is a DVD burner, not BluRay, but there is an available exapnsion bay for that too.

Mine came with a 350 watt power supply (specifications I read elsewhere indicated it might only be 300 watts) that is, so far, whisper quiet. The inside of the case is uncluttered and adding the Ceton card was simple enough, though I need a pair of pliers to break the PCI slot cover loose from the bar on the cage. Don't let the Amazon listing fool you, there are 2 USB 2.0 and 2 USB 3.0 connectors AT THE TOP FRONT of the case, plus 4 more 2.0 and 2 more 3.0 on the back of the machine, giving this PC a total of 10 USB connections. I swapped the included USB mouse and USB keyboard for a Logitech wireless set that used a single USB connection, added the cable tuning adapter my cable company required for full CableCard operation with the Ceton tuner card, connected a media IR remote, connected an APC UPS monitoring cable, and a local USB printer and still have a free connection on the back of the unit plus all the connectors up top for flash drives and portable devices to recharge.

Asus included a little bit of bloatware, but did not make it tough to uninstall if you wish. And it is certainly not as much as I have seen on PCs from many other manufacturers. One of the more interesting addons is AICharger which is designed to fast charge Apple devices attached to the USB ports. Some of the other stuff looks kind of interesting and with the large hard drive and fast processor I've decided to let most of it hang around until I have more time to check it out. If it were hurting performance, I might be more concerned.

All in all, I would say this is a great value if you're looking for a good, higher end, general purpose PC. If you're a hard core gamer, it could be great too, but most would probably want more graphics power.

CompuLab fit-PC2 2GB/2GHz (rev 1.4) Atom Z550 2 GHz, RAM 2 GB, bay for 2.5" SATA HDD Review

Sep 2011 I was looking around for a fanless, low-power PC to use as a networked media player. The fit-PC2 looked like it had everything. Some reviews said it could support HD audio (like Dolby TrueHD or DTS Master Audio) but it cannot. It does have digital audio out from a 3.5mm socket and the included cable has a coax connector (RCA or phono plug).

I bought the diskless fit-PC2 2GHz Atom processor and 2GB RAM. I fitted a solid state drive and installed Windows 7 (this added about $270 to the cost). With a solid state disk it truely is silent.

It can play DVDs but struggles on high-data rate sections (high detail or fast changing scenes). I wouldn't expect it to cope with Blu-ray movies. However, I use it as a music server. It's fantastic. Set up with iTunes 10 and with all my music transferred to it, no keyboard, mouse or screen, just an output to a local amplifier. It draws so little power, I leave it on most of the time and only shut it down when it will be unused for a long period. The front panel button is configured to hibernate/wake up.

It's connected to my network by wireless. I use VNC to remote into it when needed. I set up the built-in IR receiver but in practice I don't use it. On my Apple devices, I use the app "Remote" so I can browse the music library and play anything through the local amp or by Airtunes to remote speakers. Compared to a music-dedicated Mac mini it's smaller, quieter and uses less power. The case gets warm in use as I gather it's used as a heatsink. No problem.

Datavideo SE-500 Digital A + V Switcher, Composite & S-Video Switcher - 4 Inputs Review

Our purchase was to be used in our church. We are really enjoying this purchase and it's really easy to use. It doesn't take up a lot of desk space and I'd encourage startup ministries and even decent sized churches to consider this purchase as well. We are using it with 2 store bought cameras and a 22" Television Monitor. Worth the money, especially because it eliminates the need for all the other pieces...

Dell Optiplex 760 Tower Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit Powerful 2.8 Dual Core 4 GB High Performance Memory 160GB Hard Drive, DVDRW/CDRW Review

The unit I purchased was with a 3.0Ghz processor and Windows 7 Pro. The usual Windows activation and updates are required.
I did not examine the interior, but exterior was clean. One foot tab missing. If it works for a few years in a light use office setting, you can't beat the value.
