Promise PR6HD18TUS: R6 Enclosure w/ 6x3TB SATA Drives, Power Cable, Product CD and Quick Start GuidePromise Technologies R6 Enclosure for 6x3TB SATA Drives (PR6HD18TUS) Review
I purchased my unit a year ago so I only have 6 1TB drives and I'm shopping for an upgraded unit now. What do you really want in a storage device? (1) You want your storage device to protect your data when a hardware failure occurs. (2) Your storage device should protect you against yourself with timely backups of your data that can be easily restored when you realized you deleted or change something you shouldn't have. (3) Your storage process should be easy or brainless.(4) Your storage device should be fast.
What is RAID in simple terms. It's a way to spread your data out over multiple drives. RAID can and should always be configured to write multiple copies of your data to your disk.
(1) I used RAID 60 That can recover ALL my data with up to two disk failures at the same time. No SSD drive gives you that level of protection.
(2) These unit are large enough for you to store many incremental backups to recover any mistakes you might do. I maintain hourly backups for the first 7 days followed by daily backup for a couple of months followed by monthly backups forever.
(3) If a disk fails a blinking light tells you which disk went bad, slide the draw open( no need to shut anything off) replace the drive and slide the new one in. The storage unit rebuilds all your data on your new drive. Once again No SSD drive, USB drive, or some drive bolted in some case will give you this level of convenience .
(4) This storage device has the fastest transfer data rate I have seen that cost less than 10,000 dollars. To get a true measurement of transfer rates you need to look at what is called sustained transfer rates. In simpler terms if I transfer 100 GB of stuff how much time will it take? A single hard drive working alone will be transfer data around 30 - 60 MB per seconds sustained. A SSD drive could be as fast as 260 MB per second sustained. My Pegasus unit is 770 MB sustained and this new unit claims up to 900 MB sustained.
6 disk RAID units normally cost more since the circuits must handle much faster sustained data transfers than smaller units. I have no complaints and believe this unit to be worth the price they charge. There are plenty of less expensive units out there that but none of them hit my requirements listed above.
