BUFFALO AirStation Pro 802.11n Plenum-Rated Gigabit Concurrent Dual Band PoE Wireless Access Point - WAPS-APG600H Review

In many ways, the AGP-600H is a nice wireless access point, except for the most important part: wireless access. The range is extremely limited. If you are within five meters of the device and have direct line of sight, it works fairly well. At more than five meters, signal strength falls way off, and it's gone at 30 meters, even with direct line of sight. If anything gets between you and the device, even a piece of wood or glass, signal strength falls off even more quickly and range is greatly reduced.

Compared to a Netgear AC-1750, wireless performance is very disappointing. I compared signal strength against an AC-1750 in the same environment, and the Netgear product delivers three to six dB more signal at the same distances, and is not nearly as sensitive to obstructions. In fact, the AC-1750 delivers a better signal at twice the distance and through obstructions than the AGP-600H does in direct line of sight.

Speed tests are also disappointing. Using the 802.11n radio, the AGP-600H can only deliver about 3Mb/sec, while the AC-1750 delivers 6Mb/sec. This was tested on 15Mb/sec upstream connection, so both results are disappointing, given that 802.11n is supposed to be capable of roughly 100Mb/sec. But the AGP-600H is more disappointing.

The setup menus on the AGP-600H are usable, but it's hard to find the detailed settings, and the unit ships without a detailed manual or the software required to do the initial configuration, which must be downloaded from a server in Taiwan.

I'll keep this unit because I need the POE capability, but it's disappointing to have to run so much extra wire to get the access point close enough to the coverage area to function; and to get such a small coverage area and limited data rates from a relatively expensive device.
