Supermicro PCI Express x4 Low Profile SAS RAID Controller (AOC-SASLP-MV8) Review

Purchased this card for use with an unRaid storage server. Opened up my case, plugged it in, hooked up the drives, and powered it on. unRaid recognized the new drives right away, no problems whatsoever.

The only thing that would make this better is if it came with the SAS to SATA cables required to attach SATA drives.

Thermaltake MAX-3543 Backplane Hot Swap Removable Hard Drive Kits 3.5-Inches SAS/SATA RAID Ready RC3400101A Review

The unit arrived well packaged. It works as expected and also worked fine with my 6gb SAS drives (the manufacturer's site says it does, but that does always match reality as I found out with an iStarUSA unit). The unit itself and the trays seem very sturdy. The plastic locks on the trays are just to keep you from accidentally popping a drive out. They work, but they are pretty flimsy. All in all this is very good unit and I would certainly get it again. The only two reasons it has 4 instead of 5 stars is that:

1) The LEDs are incredibly bright. I had to put electrical tape over them.
2) The fan is pretty loud. This may not bother everyone, but I had to replace it with a quieter one to live with it next to me.

64GB RunCore Pro IV 1.8" 5mm PATA ZIF Plus Solid State Disk SSD Review

Update: Today is August 6, 2013 and I am updating to report that this drive is still working fine in the Dell with daily use.

---

It has only been installed for a couple of days, but this is a great upgrade for a Dell D420. I partitioned and formatted the drive in Windows 7 for proper alignment, then installed XP fresh to that formatted NTFS partition. As with every other SSD I've installed, setup was very quick. The D420 is a fairly slow machine, but it's a good computer and an SSD makes it totally usable for day to day work. I had no problems getting the right part; I think Amazon now lists the Mac version separately and the one I received worked perfectly.

I love that it comes with a little case for the old ZIF drive, which made copying the users' old files over to the new drive a snap. I wish this product had been around a year or so ago when I had trouble finding a Toshiba HDD (only available in 4200rpm) for this machine; for just a little more money this SSD blows it away.

AS Rock Z77E-ITX LGA1155/ DDR3/ SATA3&USB3.0/ A&GbE/ Mini-ITX Motherboard

AS Rock LGA1155 DDR3 SATA3 USB3.0 A GbE Mini-ITX Motherboard Z77E-ITX Review

I have a full-sized rig in my living room and wanted a smaller one for the bedroom. I needed a mini-PCIE slot on the motherboard for wifi and a Z77 chipset to take full advantage of the i7-3770K I got so cheap at MC. The highly rated Asus Deluxe mITX board was out of my price range so I was left to choose between Gigabyte and ASROCK. I had been at the same decision point for my full-sized rig and I first went with Gigabyte since I hadn't heard of ASROCK at that time. However the POST time was unacceptable so I ended up going with ASROCK for that computer. When I noticed a free RAM promotion at the Egg for the mITX ASROCK board, I jumped on it, though I would still have bought it at the asking price if I had to.

Pros:
1. mSATA slot on the underside. When I bought the board this was one of the main selling points because I could use the mSATA to hold a 256GB SSD as primary and free up space in the rest of the case for better airflow. However I didn't end up using it later because I was concerned about air-flow and heat down there. In hindsight, now that I have my case fully crammed, I think I might have been better served with a 64GB mSATA for intel RST (gives SSD-like performance without actually using the SSD as a drive) and just having another 2.5 HDD for data. It would have freed up a lot more space inside my tiny case. One minor caveat here is that the mSATA slot is SATA2 even if you have a SATA3 drive (unlike the newer ASROCK boards for Haswell that have SATA3 mSATA slots).
2. 8-pin CPU connector on the ASROCK versus 4-pin CPU connector on the Gigabyte. 4-pin is rated up to 150W and the 3770K can hit 160W at max load without overclocking (overclocked it can hit 250W). This is something I noticed post-purchase, so it was a good think I went with this board.
3. 4 USB3 ports on the ASROCK versus 2 USB3 ports on the Gigabyte board. It can support another 2 USB3 and 4 USB2 ports via headers.
4. It has an eSATA port which I will never use.
5. I needed the mini-PCIE slot for a wifi card and this was one of the few boards that has it. It already has a good quality Realtek wifi module, which is supposed to be better than the Broadcom module that most other motherboard manufacturers bundle with theirs. However it does not support 5GHz which I needed to fend off heavy interference at 2.4GHz in my highrise building. So I bought an Intel 6235 dual-band wifi + Bluetooth card Intel Network 6235AN.HMWWB Centrino WiFi Card Advanced-N 6235 Dual Band Bluetooth Retail and Antenna that support 5GHz Protronix 2dBi RP-SMA Antenna for Wireless PCI Card or Router. I thought the 2.4GHz antenna that was included with the board was too ugly to use anyway.
6. It comes with many extras like 2 SATA3 cables, an ugly but functional antenna, DVI-VGA adapter and a multimedia suite which I hear is pretty good but I've never tried. ASROCK also has a free overclocking utility that you can use in Windows for rather easy overclocking without messing around in the BIOS.
7. POSTS very quickly, even quicker than my Z77 Extreme4.

Cons:
1. I'm using a Thermalright AXP-100 cooler. The backplate make contact with the side of the mSATA slot causing some tension. The bracket for the cooler at the top makes contact with the capacitors that are lined up alongside the CPU. I was very fearful of causing damage while tightened everything down but luckily it turned out just fine. I could have used washers to add some clearance but I did not want to risk insufficient thermal contact with the CPU.
2. Antenna wires run all the way from the mini-PCIE card to the back of the antenna connectors on the back. Seems too fragile. They could have soldered these to the board closer to the mini-PCIE slot.

Product Description

StarTech.com understands that the needs of a Server Room can vary greatly, and some configurations change around at the drop of a hat. That's why we've developed the SLIDESHELFD, a black 2-in-1 slide-shelf / keyboard tray that helps you keep costs down and productivity up. The SLIDESHELFD can be used as a sturdy sliding shelf, or a pull out drawer. As your server cabinet needs change, the SLIDESHELFD changes to suit. Need to change the drawer holding your keyboard or other input devices? Simply flip the installed drawer over and it becomes a shelf to hold monitors, laptops and other diagnostic equipment. An easy-to-hide handle pulls out to help you get a grip on the situation and hides away quickly. Comes with all the tools you need to install it in your server cabinet: rails, cage nuts, screws, ball bearing slide and adjustable brackets. This product is compatible with the 7236CABINET,RK2236BKF, RK4236BK, and RK4236BKNS DuraRak cabinets.

StarTech.com 22-Inch Deep Sliding Server Rack Cabinet Shelf SLIDESHELFD - Black Review

I purchased this product from Amazon.com to provide a working shelf for my Startech 25U 4POSTRACK25. Rather than
use a traditional all-in-one KVM shelf with keyboard, touchpad and monitor, I decided to build my own setup using
this rackmount shelf and other parts. I'm building PC's instead of servers, which those other prebuilt KVM shelves
are oriented toward. Those cost about $500 for a basic model to well over $1000 depending on mfr. and features to
use with servers.

This allowed me to pick and choose every component, and change them as needed, at much lower cost. I can standard-
ize on any keyboard, mouse and monitor I want, and switch any one at any time. I built around the TRENDnet TK-802R
PS/2 VGA KVM 8 port rackmount switch.

This shelf from Startech is very nice, quite sturdy and well-made. To assemble it one should be mechanically adept
because the instructions are rather sparse, giving almost no direction. Even the pictures only help somewhat. The
first thing to do is attach the drawer slide rails to the sides of the draw, after separating the slides releasing
the black latch lever. The tapered end of the slide faces toward the rear of the drawer. Screw heads are inserted
from the outside, and the washer, lockwasher, and retaining nut are then attached and secured from the inside of
the draw.

The stock picture on this product page is for mounting onto a 2 post rack. My pictures will make very clear what is
the correct order and position of each part to install in a 4 post rackmount like mine. The smaller brackets then
are attached to the outer rail. The holes only line up in one end to do this. The black drawer backstop inside the
outer rail is towards the rear. Attach each outer side rail to the front using the screws into M5 cage nuts in the
frame. Next attach the rear rackmount brackets at the same height in the rear of the unit, placing the outer slide
into this bracket. Once the rear bracket is secured, you can insert 2 screws through the bracket and outer rail to
mate this outer slide assembly. In all cases the screw heads are mounted INSIDE the bracket and rail, reversed of
how the drawer screws are mounted. The washers, lock washers, and nuts face outside the sides of the slides. This
is done in both instances because there is a ball-bearing slide assembly inside the outer rail, for clearance of
the draw to move inside the slide mounts.

Last step is to attach the handle to the drawer front as pictured, then insert the drawer into the slides similiar
to a desk or file cabinet drawer. The handle is easily reversed to hide-away and exposes a flush flat side. I still
have some cable management to do. The drawer was placed under the KVM to keep it exposed, and allow clearance for
the mouse and keyboard wires, because the draw has no cable management. Some cable clamps after connection to the
KVM will tidy all my AC, DC, printer, KVM, telco, USB and network cables once routed neatly in bundles.

For less than $300, I built a flexible standard PC KVM rackmount system for up to 8 computers, and cascadable if I
ever need to expand by using this Startech rackmount shelf drawer.

Epson Workforce 1100 Color Inkjet Wide Format Printer

Epson WorkForce 1100 Wide-Format Color Inkjet Printer (C11CA58201) Review

First, be aware that the Workforce 1100 is a four-color printer, not a photo printer, and none of my comments reflect any expectation that it should produce output that looks like a photo printer. I expressly buy four-color printers so as to best simulate the four-color offset printing processes (i.e.: a printing press) which the art I create in Adobe Illustrator will eventually be reproduced as. If you are looking for a printer capable of the seamless, continuous tones that photographs contain, buy a six- or more-color printer designed for that purpose--not the Workforce 1100.

Understanding the limitations of a four-color printer, I was still disappointed with and ultimately returned this printer. Its failings, in my experience, can be summarized by two phrases: "ink-sucking" and "clog-o-rama."

For years, I nursed along a series of ancient Epson 740 printers, which--when they worked--produced remarkably smooth and bright output on any paper. The 740 is a scrappy, hardworking printer, but its printhead was prone to clogging frequently and randomly, and cannot be user replaced. Running the print driver's head-cleaning routine sucked a lot of ink and didn't always work, but by using refilled ink cartridges I was still able to print for about one-fifth the cost of people using newer printers. Unfortunately, the 740s eventually all gave up the ghost and it was time to buy a replacement.

I'd been wanting large-format output on my next printer for a long time, and the Workforce 1100 fulfilled not only that requirement (and my four-color preference) but had a very reasonable purchase price.

This large printer has a solid, sturdy feel for the price, and installation of its software on OS X went quickly and smoothly. (As other reviewers have noted, it is odd that a printer apparently targeted at business users has no built-in networking option, though you may be able to share it from the computer it's hooked to via USB with the help of printer sharing features on OS X or Windows.)

The trouble began when I actually started printing. The output looked good at first--about the same as my old 740s, but with the added bonus of large-format output. But after literally only about fifty pages, rows on the printhead started to clog, requiring multiple ink-wasting cleaning cycles and the replacement of ink cartridges just to continue the cleaning process. And just like the old 740s, the Workforce 1100 pumps ink through all the printhead colors when cleaning--not just the one that's clogged. It eventually unclogged via cleaning cycles, but reclogged soon after.

I apparently naively thought that 15 years of research and development on printing by Epson (since the time they'd made my earlier printer) would have resulted in a cure for the frequent clogging and heavy ink consumption that I knew was part of owning the older Epson printer. But I'm beginning to think it's less of a technical hurdle to be overcome by Epson than a designed-in strategy for selling ink--lots of ink. In my experience, the number of estimated pages of color printing listed on this printer's box is laughably optimistic.

Well, Epson: "Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me." I packed the Workforce 1100 back in its original box and sent it back for a refund just before the official return period ended. I am now an HP printer owner and have had none of the problems I experienced with the 1100, let alone all those years with the 740s.

If you still want to take your chances on this printer, I strongly suggest you keep the original box close at hand, as well, and keep an eye on the calendar so you don't miss the chance to return it in case you find, as I did, that the specs that look so good on paper end up not looking so good on a desk heaped with expensive ink cartridge empties.
