Tripp Lite BC600SINE 600VA 375W UPS Battery Back Up Pure Sine Wave PFC Tower 120V USB, 6 Outlets Review

Updated review 10/1/2011:

Would have been 5 stars if it weren't for the strong burnt odor while new.

Good points:
(1) It works as advertised - while on battery it outputs a fair sine wave of 114 VAC RMS at 62 +/- 1.5 cycles, an enormous improvement over the coarse stepped square wave AC output of non-sine UPS's. It's pretty clean with a 35-watt load, and only somewhat distorted with a more typical 175 watt load of a single computer + LCD monitor, so even PC's with newer PFC power supplies should work OK with it (for waveform illustration I uploaded 2 scope photos to Amazon's product web page). Switchover time is acceptably fast, no blips seen on a computer.
I did not test the USB auto-shutdown software.

(2) Decisive factor in choosing this Tripp Lite: their tech support is actually located in the U.S. and gave prompt accurate answers to my questions. Another U.S. brand I contacted had overseas "support" which gave me a completely erroneous answer to a simple question; when queried again they said they would get back to me, but never did. One prays that Tripp Lite will not someday yield to the sorry practice of outsourcing support to unqualified answering services abroad.

Caveats, first 2 minor & the 3rd more major:
(1) The owner's manual is oversimplified to the point of being insulting, without such essential information as the battery type, runtime table (available online), and steps for replacing it (the battery door is locked by an unmarked screw). Their ads say "Hot-swappable, user replaceable batteries" but the manual states that "There are no user-serviceable parts inside" and "Battery replacement should be performed only by authorized service personnel". Further research shows that its single 12-volt RBC51 battery can indeed be replaced by owners, and that this excuse for a manual is likely the result of technically-illiterate legal personnel overruling the tech writers in a sad effort to avoid any kind of responsibility.

(2) Not a green machine: it runs warm, drawing 15 watts even when the battery is fully charged and nothing is connected. By comparison, a non-sine UPS of similar capacity draws only about 2 watts when not in use. If in service 24 hrs/day, the BC600SINE will add about $1.50 a month to your electric bill even while on standby.

(3) When new it gives off a very strong, unpleasant, penetrating odor like burned plastic, fumes that built up in a small computer room and greatly irritated my nose and eyes - I had to put it outside for 21 days, powered on with a fan blowing through it, before the smell decreased from being intolerable to just annoying. Googling now turns up similar complaints for other UPS makes - evidently the Chinese factories are using materials that are inferior to those of times past when manufacturing was done here. For many years I worked with electronic equipment in the military, industry, and at home, and never encountered such a long lasting bad smell except in devices that had burned up components in overloads. So, be aware that if you have a functional nose and intend to use this UPS in a small room, you might not be able to stand the odor for 3 weeks or more after delivery; on the other hand, in large well-ventilated rooms like offices it may not be so overpowering.

First Alert Single Digital Wireless Indoor/Outdoor Color Camera w/LED Night Vision Review

It originally seemed that this camera was incompatible with my original DW-700 single camera security system. WHY, I DID NOT know 'cause I couldn't find my Owner's Manual. It is not like the little ball cameras that First Alert sells in groups of four with a different monitor. They are nearly IDENTICAL "DIGITAL" cameras to the DW-700 camera. This one would NOT "PAIR" (link/sync) with my monitor. I tried it SEVERAL times. I even switched camera positions with my original camera, to no avail. Well, I FINALLY found the Owner's Manual on the First Alert website in some obscure small print in the download section after looking for it THREE times. The truth is, I was a DUFUS & forgot to push the link button of the cable area of the camera itself during the SIXTY second time frame that the monitor gives you. A pretty TRICKY endeavor when you have to climb a tall ladder quickly at night.

StarTech.com 3.5in 4 Drive eSATA USB FireWire External SATA RAID Enclosure Review

I bought this to offload data from a Lacie RAID5 unit which I had to send in for warranty service. From the moment I received it I wished I'd bought it originally instead of the Lacie unit. For one thing, the Lacie unit came with drives installed in removable drive trays but one can't change the drive in the tray oneself without voiding the warranty. I much prefer being able to purchase my own drives and swap them myself -- particularly in a RAID unit where a single drive failure eliminates the security the RAID was providing until the drive is replaced. When the first drive failed in the Lacie unit, I had to send it in and wait on replacement whereas I would have preferred to just run to the store, buy another drive and only pursue the warranty service on the failed drive after replacing it in the RAID.

The Startech unit does not use drive trays -- the drives slide into the case directly. The unit comes with a set of handles which attach to the drives using the front set of mounting screws along the side of the drive. The handle lays flat against the face of the drive after installation but swivels out to give you something to tug on to remove the drive. I think I would have preferred some sort of an ejector to push the drive away from the connections and out of the unit slightly so as not to have to bother attaching the handles but they were easy to attach (it even comes with a small screwdriver for the task) and I am not swapping the drives with anything else so there is no harm in having the handles attached.

Once the drives were installed, I ran across what is, so far, my only real complaint about the unit. The cover which fits on the front of the unit over the drives, has a latch which is actuated by a push on the cover -- in other words, push it once, it latches into place; push it again, it comes loose for removal. Problem is, after installing the drives and picking the unit up to move it to its resting spot; arranging it in place; rotating it to attach cables; etc., every time I turned around I was grabbing the front of the unit and the cover immediately popped off. Rather annoying.

After getting it set up, I created the RAID. While building the array is quite easy, how to do it isn't obvious from looking at the unit so it is important not to lose the owners manual. I chose to go with RAID 1+0. Since this is a simple arrangement of striping + mirroring there was not much setup required and the array was built in less than a minute. I only had one esata port on the machine I was copying the data from and it was attached to the Lacie unit so I was forced to use USB 2.0 for the Startech -- thanks to the slower connection, transfer of 1.5 TB of data took quite awhile. Once transferred, I hooked it up via esata and transfer speeds now seem very quick -- I haven't done any benchmarks but subjectively I am very happy with the performance.

Rather than going with straight activity lights/leds on the front of the unit, Startech put the multicolored LEDs behind some sort of lens/diffuser/whatever which creates a non-glaring bar of light across the front of the unit. The bar is blue when there is no drive activity and changes to a pleasant pinkish-lavender when the drives are being accessed. The four segments (for the four drives) blend into each other so blue segments sort of flow into purple segments. It's a nice touch -- it lets you know what is happening without blinding you from halfway across the room like the lights on some PCs/electronics these days. There are a number of other status lights behind a semi-translucent plastic panel containing icons to identify the meaning of the status light (such as the fan level and setting), the RAID level and status, etc.

Though the fan allows different settings to trade-off noise for cooling performance, I have left it on the auto setting and have found the fan to be very quiet. I can't imagine it being a problem for anyone.

I am using the unit on a Linux system but it should work on pretty much any system which supports one of its connections: esata/usb/firewire. Since the RAID controller is built into the unit, and controlled through hardware buttons on the case, no special drivers are required.

All in all a nice little unit -- compact in size, with a lot of nice features and it seems to work great. I'm very pleased.

ASUS CM1435-US003S Desktop (Grey) Review

I build my own computers, and I had moved into a new home to find that my computer did not survive the move. The motherboard had gone bad, and while it wasn't a result of the move, it was made clear after the move.

I plan to build another computer, but for the time being I just wanted something I could start up out of the box. I was amazed to find this product at this price. I've always trusted ASUS products, and this one does nothing but strengthen my beliefs in the company.

The tower is rather nice & compact. It is also relative light (especially in comparison to my self-built PC). The machine comes with a USB keyboard, and USB mouse from ASUS. The mouse has a track ball (I'm not sure if you can get away with a non-track ball mouse these days). The product was incredibly easy to set up, and get started up for the first time. Windows 8 (while I had my doubts) is actually very user friendly. It will take a little getting use to as it is a bit different from Windows 7 in some ways, but I am impressed how quickly the operating system starts up when turned on (after the machine is set up). There is a very helpful tutorial that runs for users to customize, and set the computer up upon turning it on for the first time.

The machine runs super quiet. If I didn't know that I turned it on I wouldn't know from the sound of it. Upon closer inspection under the hood of this beauty it is discovered that there is only 1 fan (2 if you include the one on the power supply) that is connected to the heat sync for the processor. There is only 1 more slot to insert memory on this machine, and I plan to throw in another stick of 4 GB (this is something I don't consider a must for everyone, but I do a bit more advanced things that will require the extra memory). The memory is from a company called AData. The hard drive is a Seagate, which is fine by me as I have a few of their hard drives with no complaints thus far after 3+ years with a couple. I was able to install a second hard drive in the machine, but I had to remove the CPU fan, and pry it in a bit.

Although the machine only has 1 fan it does not run hot at all. One draw back for those of you that think you want to stick a bunch of stuff in this machine, the power supply is a standard 350 watt unit.

All-in-all this product is well built, quiet, and very affordable. It is a very good mid-grade machine as far as power goes. I would not recommend opening up the machine unless you know what you are doing as it will void any warranty you have left on it. I would recommend this product to anyone looking for a good deal on a new desktop.
