StarTech.com 7-Port Metal Industrial SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Hub Rail Mountable (ST7300USBM) Review

This box is top notch as far as quality - the box is black painted metal with mounting flanges, and comes with little metal clips for mounting to a rail. It comes with a male-A to male-B USB 3.0 cable for attaching to your computer.

However, be careful! It does *NOT* come with a power cord, and Startech does not make, sell, nor suggest anything as a solution! After a chat session, I found that to fully power the 7 USB 3.0 devices, you need a AC to DC power adapter that outputs 40 volts and 6.3 amps. I've searched all over and haven't found any solution - there is no laptop power adapter that is suitable. If I could buy a power cord for the box, I'd give it 5 stars. But as it is, I'm giving it 2 on account that I can't use the thing. At this point, I wish I had gotten something else.

What I've done is I bought: http://www.amazon.com/A200-ST2043-A355D-S6889-A505-S69803-L305D-S5869-L305D-S59222/dp/B0080E6U20/ref=sr_1_77?ie=UTF8&qid=1360113158&sr=8-77&keywords=40v+6a+dc which has DC-Output : 19V-6.3A-120W. That wouldn't be enough to fully power all the ports, but might power half of them... I cut the end off the power adapter and plugged the wires into the terminal block that StarTech provides.

StarTech says that the power light only comes on if the unit is plugged into the computer. The light does not come on if it is only plugged into the power adapter. StarTech confirms this.

This is all plugged in and nothing has blown up yet. There are a couple of interesting SuperUser posts about USB powering:
[...](it won't let me paste links here...)
[...]

As for Startech, the person in their chat-support was patient and willing to help, but did not have a viable solution to the problem, and didn't promise anything.

[UPDATE March 5,2013]
Folks, I returned this device (much credit to the seller, Adventurer's Bag for being so helpful!) and instead, I purchased this:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B009NESU4M/ref=pe_175190_21431760_M3T1_ST1_dp_2
It is a 10-port metal-encased USB 3.0 drive by Orico that does come with a 12v-4amp power adapter.

I don't know if it is a characteristic of USB 3.0 adapters, but with these last two devices (the Startech and the Orico), when you plug a device into a different port, it has to install the drivers again for THAT port. It's not like what you are used to on a computer's USB 2.0 ports where you can plug a device in once and it is always recognized after that. No, with these hubs at least, each port is treated as a separate entity. But after you have plugged the devices into the port, the computer will remember it on THAT port. That means in order for the computer to remember the device on every port, you have to plug it into every port.

Asus G46VW-BHI5N43- i5-3210M 2.5Ghz - 14" Laptop - 8GB Memory - 750GB Hard Drive - GeForce GTX660M - WINDOWS 8 -Black Review

Pros

This laptop is great for gaming as it has the ROG logo, I can run assassin's creed 3 on ultra setting with out drop in fps, very smooth( this only happened after I updated the drivers and learned how to use the nvidia GPU, before then it was automatically go on the intel GPU with was ok because it was an easy fix)

The sound is very clear and loud, but is only good for long playing times

The small screen makes it really great for portability (14 inch)

the i5 processer is prefect for playing games

The screen is a matte screen so it doesn't act like a mirror and reflect

The brushed aluminum for the palm rest is actually plastic so its way easier to clean

I like the stealth bomber look that this laptop has.

Windows 8 is great once you learn to get used to it.

has lots of usb ports and all of them are 3.0

Supports hdmi

The keys are very quite

the laptop stays very cool because it has fans on the back instead of having it on the bottom, its a great asset for gamers.

No finger prints!!! the plastic on the casing is matte as well as the screen so it stays very clean for the most part.

easy to add more RAM.

Cons

The screen brightness is not that strong so its impossible to use this laptop outside on a bright day.

The screen res. is not the best.

The sound has virtually has no Bass, headphones and/or speakers are recommend.

It is hard to upgrade. it is hard to change parts because you'll have to take apart the whole laptop. No easy access.

Over all this is a great laptop for the price.

What is IPS?

IPS stands for in-plane switching. An IPS-LCD is a type of thin display that offers better viewing angles than TFT-LCDs. IPS-LCDs feature two transistors for each pixel, where TFT-LCDs use just one. This requires a more powerful backlight, which delivers more accurate colors, and allows the screen to be viewed from a wider angle. The downside is that an IPS-LCD may consume more power than a TFT-LCD.

IPS-LCDs typically are found on high-end cell phones and portable devices. Apple's iPhone and iPad both feature IPS-LCDs, so does nexus 7 tablet.

9.7" Android 4.0 IPS Capacitive Touch Screen 16GB Wifi A10 Tablet w/ Dual Camera MID970IPS - Dragon Touch (TM) [by TabletExpress] Review

Dragon touch 9.7 IPS Allwinner A10
Update 2/27/13 TabletExpress complete lack of concern for their customers continues by still selling the tablet as the MID970IPS. MID9716W is the new model and there is a firmware image available for it on TabletRoms.
UPDATE 2/14/2013: They are still listing this as the MID970IPS but in fact are shipping a different model with slightly different specs. The ROMS for the MID970IPS will not work on the new tablets but we have access to a new ROM on TabletRoms if anybody need one.
UPDATE 1/3/2013: There a currently two custom ROMS for the Dragon Touch 9.7 . Tabletroms is the first sight with a link. They fix pretty much all the bugs that are inherent in the stock firmware including Play working correctly.

I have had two of these for a couple months now putting it through it's paces before putting out a review. They retail at the $150-$170 mark. Normally I do a first impressions but one issue with the reseller made me hold back a little which I will go into at the end of the review.

First the Manufacturers Specs:

Operation system: Android 4.0.4 Support HD Flash 11
Main IC: A10 (CPU+ GPU+ VPU) Cortex A8 1.2G
Screen: 9.7 inches IPS 5 Points Capacitive Touch 16:9. 1024 * 768
Storage: 16GB
Memory: 1 GB
Storage Extend: 128MB-32GB SD/TF Support
Wifi: 802.11b/g/n
Camera: Dual-Camera, 2.0Mpx Back, 0.3Mpx Front
G-Sensor: All gravity induction
USB: Dual Min USB (this ias actually incorrect. It is dual Micro USB)
Battery: 7800mAh
Language: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Japanese,Polish ,Russian, Chinese
Online entertainment: Support Online video, online TV, online Movie, Online Music, Online Radio.
Game: 3D Game can be supported by internal 3d accelerate of hardware. There are more than 200 thousands kind of free software in google market
Music Playing: MP3,WMA,APE,FLAC,WAV Format
Video Playing: Formats Support: MKV(H.264 HP),AVI,RM/RMVB, MPEG-1,MPEG-2
Video Output: HDMI 720P to 1080P to 2160P full HD output, and Video OutPut(AV OutPut)

The tablet comes with the standard USB cable, OTG adapter, and charger. Functioning Play Store installed. Unit charges off of USB as well.

Out of the box this is a nice feeling solid tablet. The screen is bright and crisp, touch is very responsive without being over sensitive. It is a very nice looking 9.7 tablet. There are some pics of the tablet and ports below.

This has been a really solid tablet. WiFi is strong, battery life is about 5-6hours with WiFi on. Screen brightness is phenomenal at the low setting.

Benchmarks are pretty decent. Stock CaffeineMark gives it 5700-6020 and Quadrant scores a solid 2290, which for an Allwinner A10 with no tweaks is pretty good. The system actually comes stock at 1.2GHZ as opposed to the normal 1.0GHZ that most 1.2GHZ advertised run at. o far all is stable. Have not tired overclocking yet, but I know SetCPU and OverClockWidget work on it.

Movies and TV shows look awesome. Netflix works. Speaker sound is pretty good. The system seems to not like AC3 audio too much, it plays it but seems to over modulate it. But that is a complaint on a lot of 4.0.4 devices. Definitely better sound than a lot of other mid range tablets I have and have tested. Movies play great through HDMI to both my big screens.

Dual Cameras. What can you say for any front facing web cam quality camera? MEH? Looks good video is fine. Now the 2MP rear facing camera. That is a little different story. This seems to be a step up from a lot of the secondary cameras on tablets. While only 2MP it takes really nice pictures, does well in low light, and has an auto focus feature. You can see the reticles finding and adjusting parts of the image when you are taking pictures. Takes very nice 720P video in good light.

E-reading is really strong on this tablet, looks pretty good even in sunlight. 9.7 is, IMHO, the perfect size for comic and graphic novel reading.

Overall this tablet itself is a great little tablet for the price. If saving a few bucks over the latest and greatest dual core is good for you than this is the tablet for you.

But let's get to the issue I mentioned earlier. More and more tablets are being released onto the market with little to no support from the resellers or manufacturers. This used to be almost solely limited to China direct white box tablets. But lately it is becoming more common in US based sellers as well. Zeki is a good example, great tablet, zero support from the manufacturer.

In the case of the DragonTouch by Tablets Express, the first unit I got had dust under the digitizer. Customer service from Tablets Express was quick to respond and I had an exchange in a little over a week, on their dime. Pretty cool. The new unit arrived, it was shipped powered on and in sleep mod. Now technically nothing wrong with that except running electronics are more susceptible to thing like moisture, shock when running. When it woke, the tablet froze. When I powered it back on nothing happened. I connected it to my PC and was able to show that the device would boot into fel mode (the hardware recovery) and the Livesuit drivers would install successfully. I contacted Tablet express to see about getting a link to firmware to flash. They wanted me to ship the tablet back to them for testing. I replied that if they gave me a link that I could test for them and save us all time and money, they again stated I could send back the tablet and if it was defective they would replace it. After several attempts to explain to them I was not just a joe schmoe user and I knew what I was doing, even going as far as to offer a non disclosure agreement, I gave in and sent the tablet back. After some more e-mails about future tablet updates a response came that "had no idea how to flash or the firmware for the tablet." Wow. But as far as replacing the tablets they are fast and courteous.

This all boils down to, this is a really solid tablet. But if you like to play with and customize your Android firmware, there is currently no stock firmware image to fall back on if your should kill an install. There are scripts available that can pull the necessary files needed to build a Livesuit image to flash, but it is a tedious and not 100% guaranteed process. As with most Allwinner tablets there is not a typical recovery to boot into, but the firmware does say it will run updates from microsd so that could be a way to go.

I would give this a 5 out of 5 stars if it wasn't for the firmware not being available. I would still recommend it, unless you are tinker junkie then it all depends on how you look at no established image for recover.
