Lexmark E260D Mono Laser Printer Review

I had a Lexmark E232 for 6 or so years and it was a great, reliable printer for my modest home office needs. I wanted higher resolution with duplex and so, given my experience with the previous Lexmark, it was natural to upgrade to the E260d.

Well, I've had the printer for several days now and can report that it's everything I was expecting - great print quality, fast print times and no paper feed issues.

The only slight problem ... seemed to be the dreaded Mac envelope mess reported here. The first time I tried an envelope ... argh! ... exactly as other users have said, the print was off the side of the envelope. I have to admit, I read those reviews before buying and figured a company like Lexmark couldn't have failed to solve an issue reported as far back as 2009. Looking further around now that I had the issue, there seemed to be no solution posted on the internet. I was worried. BUT ... I contacted Lexmark support and, within a few minutes they had a solution. And the solution, seemingly for the first time on the internet is:

In the print dialogue, from the menu that initially reads 'Layout', select 'Paper Feed'. From the menu that appears, change 'Auto Select' to 'Manual Envelope'. And that's it.

Now, Lexmark has had 2 years to fix their paper 'Auto Select' which seems to fail to 'auto' select Envelope when the page size is set to Envelope ... but still - their support was excellent and the printer is a bargain for what you get. We'll see what the toner costs turn out to be - but I was pleasantly surprised by the toner use of my E232 and I'm hoping this will be the same.

Bottom line: If this fits your needs, you wont regret buying it.

Very cool I got it as a gift for my dad and he loved it. It will turn heads when used in public. Pros: gets compliments and attention when used in public, also very convenient and small, easily carried or stored. Cons: Sometimes keys are just a little hard to press meaning it might fail to detect a few key strokes now and then. Also mouse lags a little bit but overall it works pretty well 4 out of 5

ViewSonic PRO8500 XGA DLP Projector - 120Hz/3D Ready, 5000 Lumens, 3000:1 DCR Review

The ViewSonic Pro8500 replaced a 5-yr old Epson 50c (1000 lumens). It is used in a church sanctuary with clear windows on the sides letting in bright sunlight. Its first use generated many compliments. The image was clear and the whites ar particularly bright. The fan was also quieter than the previous projector. The projector will be used for Powerpoint and DVD videos. I haven't tested hi-def or 3D.

Some menu items described in the user manual were missing (like the option to choose your own startup screen), but I found all the functions that I needed. ViewSonic Tech Support suggested that I try a new cable for the missing menu items. Of course that made no difference, then they said they would contact me within 48 hrs., which they did not. So I wouldn't expect good service, but the projector itself performed well. It was the brightest (5000 lumens) projector I found at a relatively low price.

Apple ATI 5870 - ZML Standalone Kit MC743ZM/A Review

Despite Apple insisting that this card does not work with the 2008 Mac Pro (MacPro 3,1) I decided to take a chance and order the card because the machine meets all of the required hardware specifications. I looked at the actual technical requirements like slot type and power availability based on the AMD/ATI information, not just what Apple officially publishes. I put the card into the machine and it works great. I ran a simple OpenCL ray tracing application and was very pleased by the performance. One thing that is not explicitly made clear without research is that the card requires two 6-pin power connections. As such, it is not possible to install more than one of these cards in your computer, at least on the model I have, however the instructions indicate that the situation may be the same for the 2009 and 2010 models that this card is advertised for.

Also, the card I received looks like the card that is under the smaller one as shown in the picture. It is around 12 inches long and will span the entire length of the PCI bay. For nontechnical people, these are double-wide cards and you should probably install the card in slot one, the lowest slot, if you need to use the other PCIe slots as it will cover the adjacent slot if installed in slot two or three. It will not work in slot four, the uppermost slot, because of its size.

Another reviewer mentions using this card as well as the old card in his computer. (As an aside, there is no "Late 2008" Mac Pro. The 3,1 was the only model released in 2008 and it was produced until March 2009.) This is not recommended as there will be no performance increase as the cards will not work together. In fact, the displays on the old card will have lower graphics performance than the displays on the new card as the cards work independently and do not share workload. (You need two identical cards and something called Crossfire for the cards to work together. The Mac doesn't support Crossfire and, as stated earlier, it is not possible to run more than one of these cards in your computer at a time.)

For those of you with older Mac Pro's, there are reports that this card or the Radeon HD 5770 may work in the 2006 and 2007 models as well (the 1,1 and the 2,1 respectively).

I had an older model that was in use 247 for 6+ years. It finally died during a thunder storm. Do not know whether it died of old age or because of electrical surge. The thunder and lightning woke me up in the middle of night like a bomb had dropped.

My wife said we must have another one like it. I bought this one from the same brand. Took me about 15 minutes to set it up including screw in the mounting plate. This newer model definitely is much better than the old one. The pan, zoom and tilt were all much smoother. The video is smooth not jerky like the old one. The image quality is fair. But it is quite sufficient the purpose it is intended. If I were nit picking on the video quality I will just have to mount my $2K video camera, not. I am happy with this unit.
