I was looking for a laptop with a good processor that would get me through college but cost less than $500. I ordered this refurbished model from amazon and I have nothing to complain of so far. Its display is crisp. It is about what you would expect as far as speed goes. It is by no means slow, and gets tasks done without wasting time. The speakers are loud enough for a laptop. The touchpad is excellent and easy to scroll with two-finger touch. In addition its zoom feature when you bring your fingers together or apart is handy. The webcam has a maximum resolution of 1.0 megapixels (I was not able to find that info. in the specs online). The microphone is fine, and about what you would expect. The case itself is fairly sturdy. I believe it could stand a 3 or 4 foot drop without significant damage. Altogether I have now used it for a month and a half and have had no problems with it. I would recommend it.

Short summary: If you're looking for an inexpensive upgrade, or an inexpensive system builder, with a power kick like a mule, don't pass this chip up. The i3-560 has a powerful left hook, and with some tweaking and the right cooling, you can really get some speed out of it. Don't expect i7 quad core performance, but don't be shocked when you find out just what this chip can do for you.

PROS:

* The price is awesome - You get a lot for what you pay, and can get even more if you bump up the power. This is more than just an entry level CPU, this will play most average games, and cover most folk's HD needs.

* On board graphics support - Reduce the need to buy an expensive card, for most users. DVDs, BluRay and most standard games and web graphics are a breeze.

* OC friendly - The chip comes clocked at 3.33ghz, but with ease you can bump this chip up. Some folks have reported up to 4ghz. So far I'm halfway there.

* Almost all major motherboard MFG's support the i3 - You'll find a system in your pricerange

* Great for upgrading from other 1156 systems

SUGGESTIONS:

* The included CPU fan works well enough for most average user's needs, but if you want to go beyond the basic 3.33ghz clock of the chip, you're going to want an even better thermal dissipation system.

I suggest either a heat-pipe-fan unit such as the Cooler Master TPC 812 - CPU Cooler with Vapor Chamber Technology and 6 Heat Pipes (RR-T812-24PK-R1), or my preference, a liquid cooling solution such as the Antec Kuhler H2O 620 Liquid CPU Cooler System. I run the Antec in several machines, a couple of them in harsh hot environments, and the CPU's scream.

* For an inexpensive system which can process really high end graphics, you can get this i3 chip and then couple it with a decent video card. In one of my systems I've coupled this chip with an eVGA GTX 285, and it's cakewalk to run true HD videos and high frame rates. Believe it or not, you could also go with a lower end video card under $100 and get really great performance as well.

* You'll get the most out of this if you couple it with a recent motherboard which supports a lot of the built-in enhancements of the chip.

My experience so far with this chip:

I've put this chip into two different setups, with really surprising performance in each. The 560 series chip seems to enjoy OC'ing more than it's newer counterparts, and runs smooth as butter.

One motherboard is a Gigabyte GA P55-UD5, and the other is a Zotac H55-ITX-C-E. Both of them had Corsair XMS DDR3 1600 memory. Without making any changes to the bios, just popping that memory onto the board, with this CPU, brought together a tough system for more than just average needs. Both systems are using the Antec Kuhler liquid cooling setup, and are running just a smidge over ambient for most average tasks.

This particular chip supports Intel HD video, which means as long as your motherboard supports onboard graphics (Such as the Zotac) then you don't need an external video card. Of course, for even crazier video horsepower, an external one is suggested, like the eVGA I run in the Gigabyte.

The included CPU fan gets the job done as long as you don't need more power than what the chip gives you out of the box. For more the more adventurous users like myself, you'll want to increase your thermal dissipation once you start OC'ing, as I state above. Again, I recommend the liquid cooling option, and Antec makes it affordable and simple.

If you do want to tune the system and up your power, there's plenty of overclocking guides and information out on the net for this exact chip, which is really nice. In my Zotac I simply upped the CPU from 3.33 to 3.5 without issue, and am probably going to aim for 3.7 or 3.8 as a final goal. Some folks are reaching 4ghz without issue, so there's room to spare!

Intel Extreme Series Desktop Motherboard BOXDX79TO Review

One star off for BIOS incompatibility, and that's being nice.

This is a great little board for the person who wants 64 GB Quad Channel RAM capacity, but who doesn't need onboard 5.1 or 7.1 audio, onboard 19-pin internal USB 3.0 connections, or more than 2 onboard external USB 3.0 connections. Of course any of these can be added/increased with expansion cards.

If you plan on going with the i7 3820 processor, let this be my warning to you. You will need either the i7 3930 or 3960 processor (at time of writing) to get this board working. The BIOS this board ships with is incompatible with the 3820, and there is no way to flash it using any of Intel's flash or recovery methods because it won't pass POST. I spent many hours reading forums with people having the same issue, and I realized I was left with 4 viable options:

1. Contact Intel - they would either flash the BIOS and send it back or send out a replacement board with current BIOS... all at my cost (time and money).
2. Have a repair shop flash the BIOS that has one of the other two processors on hand. Repair shops are plentiful, but none I could find wanted to eat the cost of a new $500 processor to get my board working.
3. Borrow the correct processor from a friend who doesn't mind disassembling his/her setup to help me. If you have such a friend (which I don't), I would recommend at the very least buying him/her a new syringe of Arctic Silver for the trouble.
4. Find a store locally who would accept an open box return on a 3930 ($500) or 3960 ($1000) purchase - preferably with no restocking fees - and flash the BIOS myself.

Since 2 and 3 weren't really options for me, I opted for #4. Micro Center had both chips in stock and was 1 1/2 hours away in Detroit. They also have a 15-day Walmart-like return policy on processors. It took a tank of gas and two round-trips, so it certainly still cost me time and money, but I didn't have to wait for the turnaround from Intel.

Here's my beef: It says on Intel's website that this board requires the 0430 BIOS, so Intel is covered. Now how many people consult the manufacturer website before buying a product from a vendor? How many people even know what BIOS their board is going to ship with? BTW - this one shipped with 0281. How many people would assume that compatibility wouldn't be an issue if there are only 3 processors that currently fit a board, and the board and processors are all made by the same company? I'm not bitter, though, because I obviously didn't do enough homework. Well, maybe a little bitter.

So if you buy this board for your 3820 processor, make sure you somehow verify that the BIOS version is 0430 or higher.

LaCie D2 Network V.2 (9000269) Review

I bought this network drive to have a centralized storage for family photos, movies and music. I had no trouble installing and configuring the drive, as it went smoothly and without any hiccups. BTW, LaCie customer service is very good, if needed, as this is my third hard drive from them. This drive also comes with Genie Backup Manager Pro, which is a big plus. Some other network drives only offer a light version of backup programs, which is limited in what you can do. BTW, the backup program in Windows 7 doesn't allow backing up to a network drive, so you have to have a third party software. The fact that LaCie D2 came with one was a big factor in my decision making. The only issue that I've encountered after the installation is that I can't watch most of my home videos on my TV. I don't think the problem is with the network drive, but with my entertainment system. One of these days I have to troubleshoot them by upgrading the firmware in my TV, DVD player and so on. The pictures, however, stream beautifully, making the old photo albums obsolete. My Yosemite pictures look awesome on a 52" HD TV. Overall, I'm glad I opted for this one and would recommend it.
